Massive drivetrain noises

Hello,

has been a while since I was last online here ^^ I've had my FCs put aside for a while now.

A friend got a 1989 T2 a couple of months ago that sat for a year. It has a Mazda reman 13B from 1991 and its running pretty good, some minor issues here and there aside which are currently being solved or are already solved. :icon_tup:

So today his car started to make massive drivetrain noises after topping out 1st to 3 rd on the highway. Really its loud, never heard anything like it. I am not kidding you. It pretty much sounds like you were hooking a bunch of coke cans on your tailpipe and were to drive it around the block cans grinding over the street and making one hell of a noise.

So that being said, the sound does appear mainly on deacceleration, sometimes on acceleration its quiet or very loud too. It changes tone with rpms. The pilot bearing seems to be shot too, it whistles noticeable when clutch is not pressed but not overly loud. I ve heard worse :) I am positive its not related to our problem here. 5 th gear seems like it doesnt want to stay in 5 th, you have to hold the shift lever in the 5 th gear position. All of the gears work fine otherwise.

My advise would be to check the following in the order listed below. I would be happy if anyone could come up with additional ideas or advise.

1) Check driveshaft play (Probably unrelated)
2) Drain gearbox oil and look for metal particles or chunks of metal (Check for internal damage)
3) Remove gearbox and check clutch / flywheel for cracks or any damage.
4) Check diff, Mazdatrix mentions that a damaged ring and pinion will make one heck of a noise (Trans / Diff Troubleshooting)

Any additional advise is very welcome and your help is greatly appreciated. If you want I could make a video of it :icon_tup:

Brgds
Steven

just a guess..Number TWO.. NO gear oil or it's low in the tranny..

Ah yes, of course that would be a possible source for noise too :) Will check and advise.

Thanks & brgds
