Making Air Inlet Duct At Home For Headlight Cover?
Well, I am getting a spare headlight assembly, and I want to see if it is possible to do? Here is a pic of what I want to get.
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/attach...&postid=427272 Any ideas on how to make this? |
I am thinking about cutting out the material, and using some epoxy or something to drop the piece down in place. Does this sound like a good idea?
|
If you can help, I might be able to make one to send one your way!!!
|
Ya its a good idea, send one my way! ;) JK man. I'm not sure about how to go about doing that but I will help ya keep this post to the top :D
|
Well, I am getting 2 complete headlight assemblies. so I will try it with the extra drivers side one first, then the extra passengers side. If that works, then I will do it to the original one, and sell/give away the extra ones!
|
I think meriah sells those. Oh. One at home? Hmmmm
|
So does Border!
Yeah, for like $100. Free=Better!!!!!!!! |
How are you going to hook up the tubing for air intake? That is are you doing this for looks or for air induction?
Me and my friend ez had this idea of cutting a scoop like the one in the picture, but just above the air box. By taking off the stock air box's cover permanently, we were going to add rubber ducting to seal it. So basically when the hood was down, the air scoop went right over it, viola! Wanna be ram air. I am still considering it. Even now with a k&n filter. BUt a different approach that will be more crazy |
That is my basic plan, as well as running a PVC pipe "ram-air" in the front lip to a totally sealed cold air box.
Warning: Mad-Scientist at work!!!!!!!!Muhwhahaha! |
if its a totally sealed box, i dunno if it will let enough air in! you might actually hurt power b/c not enough air will flow through the wee little duct. why dont u remove the lense under the pop up light, and run ducting into a cold air box? that should be large enough... just an idea! w/ the new TII engine, i think im gonna do a scoop from the mouth of the car, since the intake is much lower due to me putting it on the turbo and gettin rid of those elbows.
|
I already have the FTP lenses hollowed out. Those are for the radiator when I add a electric fan, but thanks for the ideas. I will aslo have the pipe ram-air, so I am sure I will be gettin enough air! How is the TII swap comin? Haven't seen you around here in a while!!!!!

You know what might be better. Is some kind of crazy vacuum fan going directly from the back of AFM powered by a belt of some kind. I have been waxing over this for last 3 weeks or so. My problem is the logistics of fine tuning it. It needs to have variable induction speed, because I don't think that just shoving air into it will be the greatest approach. Although it might work for some hp gain, It will be kinda of sloppy and may be less effective in the maintance longevity area. I believe that once I can tune the intake pressures for optimal fuel ratios, I can then work on a similair system for the exhuast.
Yeah yeah I know, its a turbo or super charger yada yada. But like you Sayeth brother. FREE or close to FREE = Better. I should Put some of the freaking calculus physics and electrical engineering knowledge I have been going to school for to work! Mad scientist? Let the Evil Empire Begin! |
We should team up! Mabye rule the world or somethin! If I can get this to work, you want the other headlight cover? If so, it's yours brother in crime!!!
|
And to hell w/ a turbo! Pround to be turbo free!!!!!! Turbo's are for sissies! j/k ;)
|
sure. Get back to later to night. Gotta go ta class
|
I am getting the stuff this Saturday. I will keep ya posted!!!!
|
Just make a fiberglass mold and copy it. Then cut the hole for the duct and make another mold of the one with the hole and presto. Can you work with fiberglass? I made a TurboII spoiler at home from my friend's car. It only cost me about $20 to make.
|
Nope, never used fiberglass before, but I can sure learn!! How does one do this, or where can I get the supplies?
|
Pegasus Racing, I think it's www.pegasus-racing.com has plastic ducts that form into tubes. In other words, it starts out as a duct, NACA or otherwise, and then extends back and becomes round so that you can hook up air hoses, etc.:)

if it ever comes to be give me a jingle i would like one!

Some things to think about. First, what happens at night time when your headlights are up? Do the areodynamics of the intended scoop permit airflow regardless, or is there an air pocket that form defeating the purpose of the ram air? okay okay, I know. Go through the little light lenses below the main headlights. Okay. sure. But then you have cut a hole through the metal that the lamp sits against in the down position. We don't really have to cut a hole. But since we went through the trouble of removing the lense for the purpose of forced air induction to begin with, we'll go this far, right? Hmmmm. Well alright, we cut the hole. Or rather, drilled a necessary amount little holes with a cobalt bit to form one big circle of these little holes. Punch it out and.... New problem. There's now a Boxed area where the headlamp usually occupies and the air will travel into, get trapped and go other places. Unless this expanse is completely sealed by means of a passage. Uh...OKay... new problem. The wires in the back of the lamp that supply the power need to be relocated out of way of the air passage we intend to put in. OH but wait! Evil thoughts' a kickin here. There's this other scoop up top too! Cool. So, when the head light comes down, we need to make sure this passage is sealed off completely like......like a fish mouth! hmmmm, Yes. Head lights up....HA HA! Air dam opens and air travels through our evil duct work. Headlights down HA HA! The duct closes like a fish mouth and the upper scoop is utillized instead. This sound cool? Or is it gay styles and need to work something else out? If it does sound good and you wanna do it this way, or have something to add to it I'm all ears. We'll move on to material and stuff next. P.S. I have Autocad 2002 on my lap top and drafting skills. Come to think of it I have a full version of 3d max too and if we got real crazy.... I might be able to modle the aerodynamic flow in and around the area of the head lights....But that might take a while. |
Wow, that was deep. Ok here is my set up so far in my head:Headlamp scoop w/ tubing heading to air box. Tube from FTP lens to air box. Tube from under frontlip to airbox for 3rd ram air effect. My roomate and his best friend are mechanical engenering majors, so I shall inlist their help on implimentation.
|
Cool.
I'll take some pictures so I don't have to be so wordy. then Ill do some photoshop work. late |
I am just a lowly English major, so all of this technical jargon really confuses me!;) I will dig around on Sunday and look at what I can do! If I can ever make one, I will send ya one so we can have this system working and to show off!!!!
|
Uh, for some stupid reason it says image is too big.
Okay, it is too big? But how come you guys post mad pics all over? I've resized it in photo shop. |
