Maintenance question - where and which oils?
 

Dear all,

I'm now a proud owner of an 1988 RX7 Turbo Infini (racing specs). I have read a lot about the rotaries, but now I have the real thing. I want to take a good care of my new baby :-)

(1) Could you recommend which oil to use for the engine? I have heard that synthetic oils are a no-no.

(2) What fluids/oild should I use:
coolant
brake fluid
clutch oil
anything else I missed?

(3) What oil goes in that canister on the right hand side of the engine (not far from where you pur in the engine oil). It has a very short dipstick. Can't figure out what is this for?

Things would be much easier if I could get my hands on an owners manual.

Castrol 20-50.

synthetics will be debated forever. I have used both without any ill effects.

Royal Purple synthetic is about the best damn oil around, never use anything else. Icemark has posted findings about its lower ash content (the reason people have told you not to use synthetics,especially cheap ones) than just about every dino around.

Ford carries a very good line of break fluid. Cant really provide you with links to facts or other opinions offhand, but i use it and it works great.

As I understand it clutch fluid is essentially brake fluid, Ford again.

Uh, the guy lives in Aussie, so that stuff might not be available or stupid expensive to get.

Any quality, brand-name mineral-based engine oil will work for the engine.  In the U.S., it's Castrol, Pennzoil, Mobil1, Quaker State, etc.

Any quality, brand-name synthetic oil will work in the transmission and rear diff.  In the U.S., it's Redline, Royal Purple, Mobil1, etc.

Any quality, brand-name brake fluid will work for the brake and clutch.  In the U.S., it's Castrol LMA, Valvoline (in the gold bottle), etc.

Any brand-name, quality coolant will work for the cooling system.  In the U.S., it's Prestone, Peak, etc.

Engine oil - mazda have been using castrol magnatec in my Tii.
Coolant - distilled water & a good quality corrosion inhibitor.
Brake & clutch fluid - yes, quality brand name, & change the brake fluid every 2 years.
The canister is the reservoir for the power steering fluid.
