lubing the shift lever...Q?

I was wondering if i needed to take off my shifter and add some type of gearoil? I just installed a junkyard tranny into my car? the tranny appears to have been sitting for quite sometime.

the Haynes manuel has the procedure to lube the shift lever. however the explaination is very vague, no specs or anything, pretty much just take it off and add the "right" type of lube. can someone shed some light on this ..

Some good ol' gear oil right into the resivor is all you need to do. Just remove the shifter and rubber boots and fill up the hole with gear oil, the same stuff that goes into your trans works fine.

Check this document

After cleaning the shifter hole, this is a good time to put the oil in the shift tower. We use 90W trans/diff oil. Fill to around middle of shift rod.
