LSD's

I searched but am still kinda unclear on this, which kind of Differential would be the best for a drift setup/daily driver/autocross? If there isnt a differential that fits all those categories, then just forget autoX. I know a lot of D1 drivers run clutch type LSDs, but i like the sound of the predictability of helical/torsen diffs. I also heard that Ted is/was running a TII with an FD helical rear end. any help? thanks

classicauto 12-29-05 04:07 PM

go with a torsen...I have done all the above with TII diff with lots of fun and little difficulty.........lets put it this way, in any one of the above events your rear end choice isn't going to affect the driveablility in different categories so much as other parts like say - your clutch - would

InMyWhiteTII 12-29-05 04:13 PM

as far as the streetability goes, i was just talking about how long it would last....i hear the clutch type, the stock FCTII anyway, only last to 50k, but by that same token i hear the helical LSDs wont handle much HP. The horsepower thing im not so worried about, i dont plan on running much more than 300ps, if that. As far as the non aftermarket, cheaper solutions go, do you think it would be better to rebuild the stock clutch type or find an FD helical?

bacek 12-29-05 04:53 PM

first of all clutch type lsds only come on s4's. going further plenty of fd owners when replacing their lsd look for s4 lsds.

im not a big drifter but i dont see what is wrong with a good working stock lsd especially since it is a lot cheaper

Thats the problem, the stock lsd isnt good and working, its got 140,XXX miles on a clutch type LSD, its shot. what i want to know is would it be better to buy an FD helical or rebuild my S4 clutch type

bacek 12-29-05 05:29 PM

the fd is a torsen unit but if i were you depending on how much rebuilding your lsd would cost (i dont know your labor rates in indianapolis they are outragous here in los angeles) you should just get an aftermarket one

Sideways7 12-29-05 05:33 PM

Where would you go to get it rebuilt? Is there some place that is better or cheaper, or just go with whatever is in the area?

InMyWhiteTII 12-29-05 05:55 PM

i would probably buy a rebuild kit and do it myself, im in an auto mechanics class and our teacher is fairly knowledgeable about such things, but i dont know if they even sell rebuild kits

BlaCkPlaGUE 12-29-05 06:31 PM

They do sell rebuild kits for the LSD at mazdatrix. Getting it done professionally will be expensive, and you should just buy a new kaaz LSD instead.

If you can do it yourself, its totally worth it.

yeah i just checked prices, to replace all the main parts of the stock clutch type it would be right around a hundred bucks. I think thats the way to go, thats pretty cheap if you can do the labor. As opposed to the ridiculously priced aftermarket units, that is

Carzy Driver 12-30-05 02:28 AM

anyone have experience with ebay lsd's, not talking about the usual ebay crap one but something like this:

I'm in the same boat, need a new rearend in my 86 base and thinking of going lsd.

Moi? O_o
No...not yet.
Still trying to track down a good deal on eBay...
hIGGI has done it with good results.

For drifting, you want something that'll lock-up in a snap.
A "2.0-way" clutch-type LSD is most popular.
This thing locks up in accel and decel, so kicking the rear out is a snap...literally.

Now, this makes this thing hellish for daily driving, unless your driving skill can compensate for this characteristic.
As a compromise, a "1.5-way" clutch-type LSD is better suited for all-around driving - including street and grip racing.

I personally prefer Cusco and OS Giken (clutch-type) LSD's myself.
I just don't want to pay for one brand new. :P

$100? The parts on mazdatrix look like they would cost about $400, 4x$40+4x$30+2X$40... if an LSD costs that much go get the mazdatrix torsen ones for $900... (get sponsored and get one cheaper mazdamotorsports) they don't wear out while u'd have to spend another $400+labor to replace the packs in 50k miles.

as of now, we have 6 TII's here running torsen from FD, used for all kinds of driving, from 6-12hour endurance racing, to drifting and daily driving. 7th to be installed in few days.

Here in Europe its cheapest choices how to get LSD, stock TII's are open diff

Waste of money...
A used FD Torsen (basically the same thing) go on eBay from anywhere from $150 to $300 on average not including shipping.
