LSD...????s
So this whole welded diff is not working for me. I dont like the sliding majority of the time thing since im not an all out drifter. So my first question is, can a Turbo II LSD fit into a N/A housing? Can a Turbo II rear end be placed onto an N/A? what would that take? Whats the risk with buying a used LSD, can it be overhauled? Does anyone know of a site that sells rebuild kits(if they exist). Thanks for your time guys! If you can answer any of those questions thanks, if not you dont have to reply.

TII lsd will not fit in a n/a diff, if u want a n/a diff, either aftermarket or get one off a s4gxl. All s5 lsd are viscous, all s4 lsd are clutch. You can get rebuild kit for both turbo and n/a at mazdatrix.com
You will need to rebuild the lsd most definitely if bought used. |
Forgot to mention that the turbo diff can fit in place of the n/a diff, but u will need a tII trans, driveshaft, and turbo halfshafts.

Buy a used S4 N/A LSD and rebuild it.

You can keep the N/A trans with the T2 diff as you can make the N/A driveshaft work on a turbo pinion flange. Just need to re-index the holes. Many have done this. :icon_tup: |

i have a s4 clutch type lsd for sale. its from a 88 gtu with only 80k miles never abused
if you want to make it easy for you if you have a s4 n/a open dif just swap in a s4 n/a diff. |

1988 Gxl lsd is probably the best to get. surprisingly my lsd still works very well so ive never needed a rebuld for it.

You can use a helical LSD from a miata, that's what I did. Works great. Although I did drop the rear diff out and took it to pineapple racing and they swapped the insides out for me.

yea that too.

I didn't know all S5 have LSD in the rear? I have an 89 N/A. How do I tell if it's a LSD?
|
whoever said that is incorrect. i actually only know for sure that the TIIs were LSD but i have a S5 GXL that is open and the GTU is open, perhaps even the GTUs as well. LSDs were actually more common in the series 4 models.
i could be wrong but if not, the viscous LSDs are junk. as i always peg leg the series 5's into driveways.. perhaps not paying attention the VLSD only locks up at speed, which is just dumb, if those cars did in fact have LSDs, i simply could not tell. |

All s5 GTUs and turbo S5 has the viscous lsd. They were the only model to come with LSD.
Viscous lsd sucks for putting hard stress on the lsd unit such as drifting which would overheat the fluid, but in auto x or less stressed races on the drivetrain, it performs well enough, not great. |
so how do you tell what you have i ha 08/87 n/a how do you tell if its open or lsd
|
jack the entire rear of the car up, and spin the tire in one direction, BOTH wheels should turn in the same direction if you have LSD.
|
ok thanks sounds good ill try that when i get off work been wondering for awhile if i have and lsd or not
|
ok i dont have an lsd so looks like im taking it to schoold to weld it up. whats the plus and minus of me doing this. my car is tii swap so i mean im just using this till i blow the rear end i just want a good posi burn out not no one peal squal.

looking like an idiot chirping the tires when taking any slightly tight turns putting a ton of stress on the rear drivetrain breaking and gaining traction CONSTANTLY broken components if the welds are not adequate the rear end may lock up completely(hopefully not on the freeway taking a turn with a family driving behind you) think of someone grabbing your e-brake and jamming it up on you and you cannot release it, don't touch the brakes, let the rears gain as much traction as they possibly can albeit it next to none. unless you lose control then the brakes will be helpful. upside: no loss of traction in a straight line due to worn LSD units can you tell i'm not a big proponent to welding diff's? |
Don't forget that the 3rd member from a late first gen "big axle" LSD (1984-85) will swap into the 86-92 Non-Turbo housings as well.
if i recall correctly 84-88 clutch type 7inch diffs even have the same part Mazda part number. I know that they do for a fact with Kaaz If you find a first gen parting out you could get lucky for cheap. Rebuilding these things isn't expensive or difficult. http://mazdatrix.com/g5.htm |
