Lsd?

Is there any way to tell if i got lsd in my car. without doing a burnout. my rear end is out of a 88 gtu. but we have no clue if it is or not.any help will do. i know there is questions about if the 88 gtu came with lsd from the factory. i just wanna know so i dont buy a lsd, if i already have one. thanx travis

Uhm, not sure but jack up your rear so both rear wheels are off the ground. Turn one of your rear wheels by hand.

If the wheel on the opposite side turns the opposite direction you either have a tungston LSD or no LSD, the latter being the most likely.

If the wheels move roughtly at the same speed in the same direction (make sure you're in nuetral) you have LSD.

88 GTU had an LSD as a standard feature. I believe its clutch type LSD, in which case if there were alot of miles on it, it is probably quite worn out.

GTU was suppose to have LSD stock. the S4 would have the clutch type LSD...

ive never heard of a Tungsten LSD... i have heard of a TORSEN but never a tungsten... tungten is what light bulb filaments are made of. and drill bits. anyhow, the Torsen type was only in the FD and Miatas

the S5 LSD were viscous type and dont wear out like the S4 CLutches... the S4 could have an LSD and be so worn out to the point that it looks like an open diff.

i jacked it up yesterday and the left it in neutral and spubn

mazda90mx6 06-27-03 12:38 PM

i jacked it up yesterday and the left it in neutral and spun the rear wheel and the other one spun the same way. but then i put it in first gear then spun it again and the oppsite wheel spun the other way. so i am really confused now. i dont have the time to crack the diff open since i need the car for work. so is there anyone that knows for sure. thanx travis

You have a LSD, in neutral, if they both spin the same way it is a LSD (that test only works on a clutch type though).

doesn't it have the tag on the fill bolt of the diff???

mazda90mx6 06-27-03 04:23 PM

no it doesnt thats way with i was wondering cause cause the diff was removed to place my friends gtu's rear end so the tag might have fallin off but i dont know for sure thats way i am asking all the questions cause i dont wanna buy a lsd when i already have one. i thank you guys for all the help.

Mine has 130k on it and its still ticking strong.

Oops, sorry mate, you're right, Torsen LSD, got the names mixed up there:) It's been awhile since I last read into the whole LSD issue.

(that test only works on a clutch type though).
true, if you have a S5 and doing the test, youll come up empty handed, cuz the 2 wheels wont turn the same direction till the Viscous snot in the LSD gets agitated enough to thicken up and "Join" the 2 axles together and make them turn simultaneously. and its this reason that i am Anti-Viscous LSD... they are slow to react and not a solid feeling.

i prefer a clutch type, either w/ clutch disc packs or conical clutches. but, a spider gear locker would be cool too... but a Torsen, yea thatd work... unless you are road racing and you frequently clip the apex and run up on the rumble strips... i heard of a guy who blew out his Torsen in his FD when his inside tire went up on the rumble strip of the apex, got air, the DIff openedup and the inside tire started freewheeling, then when it touched down on the pavement, the sudden stop shocked the dif and blew it up... ouch :D

I have heard that story as well, but have never seen that in person.
