Low end torque? Friend dyno'd his GN with stk engine + only bolt ons! OMFG!!!!!!!!
My friend dyno'd his '87 Buick Grand National (3.8i turbo/intercooled V6) last weekend and he finally told me the #'s. A rundown on the car quickly: weighs 3800lbs and runs 11.70's@119mph with 98K mile stock longblock engine (stock heads and cam too!) on 275/50/15 Nitto DR's. Here are his bolt ons: T-64E turbo (big sucker), stiffer valvesprings, 3" downpipe, dual 3" exhaust, 70mm TB, CAS front mount intercooler, custom chip with 50lb/hr injectors, LT1 mass air flow meter. The rear differential is stock and the transmission has been rebuilt with good parts and a 9"/11" 3200 stall convertor. The 9" front section give the stall for 3200rpm and the 11" rear section allows a lockup mechanism to be installed in it. My friend locks up the stall convertor in 3rd gear at the track and it gives him .2 ets and 3 mph faster than running it unlocked. This car gets 22mpg+ driving at 70mph on the highway too due to the lockup mechanism in the convertor, 3:42 rear end gears, overdrive (.70) transmission, and the 8:1 compression ratio of the engine. Gotta luv booost!
Running 21* timing and 26psi through the exhaust on 10 gallons of 100 octane and 1 gallon of 110 octane just to be safe and have no chance of knock with the high boost pressures: 456 rwhp @ 4600rpm and OMFG..................... 598 rwtq @ 3200rpm So when you add the 20% parasitic drivetrain loss it is a little more than 700 flywheel ft/lbs of torque! At 3200 rpm people! No headwork or cam upgrade..... pretty nuts. GNX7 BTW- In my conversion I have everything he does except for a larger turbo. Mine is still stock for now. I also have a larger cam in my engine (20hp+), ported cylinder heads (+40hp), and aftermarket headers (+20hp). I guess I need to finally buy that turbo after I buy the new 225/50/16 S-03's up front on my RX-7. This is of course a handling oriented car with just a bit more oooomph! Buick GN- American masterpiece of the 1980's! |
so what times are you running?
