Loud Constant Beep, Power Steering not working
So Whenever I crank my car I get a loud constant beep, not a buzz, a beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee the entire time its running and the power steering is not working. It has fluid, and it has a belt on it, and the pump is not seized.
It happened a few times before but went away within 10 seconds. |
The buzzer sounds when you go over a certain RPM, or have low coolant/oil. Check the coolant and oil level. As far as you power steering problem goes I don't think that is related to the beeping.

Thanks for reading what I posted really hard.

Bump cant drive the car with this shit.
Also note ITS NOT A DAMN BUZZER ITS A BEEP. IM NOT RETARDED AND CAN TELL THE DIFFERNCE BETWEEN 2 DIFFERENT SOUNDS. |

Does your speedo work?
|
Also the FAQ thread on this second generation forum covers BEEPS. Seems maybe the second or third line in that coverage is relevant to your case. I know nothing about power steering .
|
I am not sure, I have not driven the car, I will check the horn and speedo in the morning.
It quit for a day, and is back again today. Anyways, the beeps thing in the faq for 2gs doesn't say anything about a constant beep sadly. |
Could be your PS control unit is failing.
Might also check the pressure switch on the PS pump. |
Allright the speedo is working, but the horn is not. This beep only sounds when its running. If I kill it or just turn ignition to on it will stop. Its not the same sound as the rev limiter buzzer, and I am assuming the same buzzer is the sound that sounds for coolant and oil, but neither is low.
And I am not sure but I may have bigger issues. I have a good bit of white smoke coming off the exhaust manifold / header. It looks like it is coming from under the heat shield. Where is the power steering control unit located? Can I just unplug it to see if the sound goes away? Also where is this pressure switch? |
The control unit is under the dash up by the top of the clutch pedal.
The pressure switch is the only electrical connection at the PS pump in the bay. |
Thanks to the wonderful shop manual and clokker I was able to find the power steering controller and I unplugged it. No more beep.
|
Any ideas on what I should check guys?
|
Bump for ideas about the retarded power steering system on this car. Is there anyway to bypass the computer and just have it work like normal powersteering?
|
I'd either fix it properly or convert to manual.
|
I don't really like the power steering system anyways so it looks like I will probably just buy a manual rack.
|
Good choice, IMO.
|
Yeah unfortunately it looks like I have the stiffer PS rack since I have an 88. I daily drove my eclipse without PS for a while, screw that.
|
Some people prefer the faster ratio of the power racks (when depowered)...I tried all three and like the slower true manual for street use.
|
Its to hard to turn in parking lots with p/s. I daily drove my dsm for 5 days without it. Ended going to see the doctor because my elbows were killing me and he gave me a prescription for some kinda anti-inflammatory.
Just wish there was some kind of way to get the p/s working but make the car shut the fuck up until I can get manual rack, they are about 250$ on rock auto, and I dont even wanna check shipping. |
Why don't you try another PS computer and see if it solves the problem?
I mean, everything was working fine before, right? |
ill have a pwr steeingr ecu, might take some time to locate it,plus im going manual so ill have one still in my 88GXL,let me know for next time we can meet up on parts, keep your eyes open cause i see manual racks for sale every now and then around $100-$125
|
you might already know this but i believe you have the speed sensitive pwr steering,i think the easy way to tell is by how many lines are coming out of the pump, not for sure but maybe 3 is for variable assist, yes its much more complicated systym then just standard PS,takes into acct alot of diff. factors using the PS ECU to adjust the effort
|
Yep, that is why its a piece of junk. I expect my steering to remain @ the same ratio not move around based on engine speed or vehicle speed. It just adds more things to break. Would rather KISS. If I can't bypass the controller unit for the power steering and just make constant ratio, then I am junking whole shebang. Just dont have the cash for a rack atm.
