Losing Brake Fluid

I'm losing a millimeter or two of fluid every week or two. Judging by how wet the ABS unit looks, it would appear to have a leak. Now, I want to verify the unit itself is leaking before I go deleting it, and not just a fitting or line around it.

So my question is this. Where do they usually leak from?

check to make sure all the fittings are tight?

Bamato 02-22-11 01:57 PM

All tight.

Are you sure you're not leaking anything around the calipers? Check under the ABS pump to see if that might be the problem if everything else is ok. I've got a leaky ABS pump I'm currently in the middle of removing to convert to non-ABS system.

also check both sides of the firewall around the brake pedal. i've heard of ppl with leaks where it was coming inside the car, but was soaking into the carpet so they didn't see it for a while.

check the rear calipers by the ebake levers

^^ this Every Fc i've owned has leaked from there

I've had two verts that leaked fluid from between the reservoir and master cylinder. Reservoir gets loose or the gasket wears...I don't know which.

A simple fix is to take two screw hose clamps and fit them around the reservoir and cylinder. Put one on each end of the reservoir and tighten them down. I've had no leaks since.

I had my slave line ripped before. Maybe check that too.

I'll give the brakes a once over again this weekend. But I just did suspension, and checked everything last weekend. I noticed there was brake fluid on the passenger side fender where the ABS line goes through. I'm fairly certain it's the ABS at this point, but I was hoping someone would tell me where from the ABS leaks...

That is where mine is leaking from as well. Unless you have access to a used one or a few thousand dollars for a new part, your best bet may just be to remove it. Mazdatrix sells a delete "kit," but it's really just a T-fitting. Not very pretty IMO.

I'm choosing to follow the Clean & Simple ABS removal method to convert to non-ABS...just for the system's simplicity's sake. There are other threads detailing ABS removal if that is a route you're willing to go.

Running entire new brake lines and scouting for misc parts isn't something I enjoy doing on my weekends .... While it looks really clean, I'll go with the delete kit for now. Save me the hassle atm, as I have plenty of other things that need doing to the RX at the moment as well. I don't like the idea of removing a good safety feature on the vehicle, but I don't like the idea of used brake parts of paying thousands for a new one.
