Loose Shifter (Bushing or Spring)?

Yesterday my shifter stopped springing back from the 1st and 2nd side. **It didn't stop entirely but its really really weak. From searching i've gathered that the most common problem is the bushing. It was also mentioned that it could be the return spring. Is there a simple way to know which it is? I plan on doing the bushing this week but i'd like to know if that is indeed the problem. Lots of people have been putting 2 bushings in instead of one. Is this just to make it tighter? or are there other reasons?

puttin 2 bushings in makes less play thus making it tighter. your problem is the spring. it really isnt that much of a problem. and to me its not worth the hassel to try to fix it. actually mine doesnt return at all from the 1-2 gear spot. you just go to get used to it. but if you want to fix it then i would say its the spring.

Thanks for the input. If it is indeed the spring, I probably won't worry about it for a while. I don't have the time to tear it down as far as it takes to get to the spring.
