Looking into buying this AE. Advice?, Questions?, ...

Hey all,

I first saw this car in the forsale section of this forum a couple months ago, just today, I saw it at autotrader and the seller reduced the price to $5000 OBO.

Here's a link to his page: http://onosendai.org/~ae86/RX7FORSALE/rx7-forsale.html

How much do you think this car is worth?

On his page, it mentions the car needs a new Y-pipe and cat, how much would it cost to get these replaced?

It also said it has an exhaust leak and power window problems... again, how much would these cost to get fixed?

Lastly, the miles are pretty high (155,000) with the compression test at 8.3. Will this engine need to be replaced soon?

Thanks for any help

in my opinion i dont think that car is worth 5 g's. i may not know as much as most people on here about 7's but that doesnt look like a $5000 car. I got my 87 turboII wiht 80,000 miles on it for $3500. the car has new cats. THe only things reallyt wrong with it were that is floods (fixed), a little rust by the windows, minor exhaust leak, passenger side window switch no work. Thats it. so bassed off of my experience its not worth that much. If im wrong guys enlighten me plz.

That's a $4000 car MAX. It's in good, but not mint condition. The added on parts aren't really worth much.

155,849 is not relatively high, but high total mileage is still going to make the car devalued.

Yes, the AE RX-7 is rare...but there isn't a market for it so the rareness had little to no bearing on the value of the car. In the L.A., hardly anyone would pay more for a car that only has some cosmetic differences than it's other siblings.

For $5000, you could get a 89+ Turbo with low mileage.

With that said, I'm glad I bought my AE and have no regrets. I liked that fact that I'd almost never see another one randomly on the road. It is the best and rarest of the Series 4 RX-7's. It doesn't need a body kit modifying to look like a newer car. I bought mine on Jan '01 for $2500 with an electrical problem that I easily fixed. Mine only had 98,000 miles on it also.

Bottom line: Don't pay too much more for an AE. If you find a good deal, then go for it. If not, then get an 89-91 Turbo.
