Looking for help with more of a personal Problem...

Its pretty much what the title says...

I have an 89 vert that is sitting in front of my house without a motor. I have a motor on the way, but there are some things that i need to pay for to get the motor running perfect, like a top end kit...clutch...boost controller, ect.

Now then, i had the idea why dont i buy an N/A motor just to get the car up and running, so i dont have to drive around my current car (an 85 volvo wagon with 279k)

My parents thought this was a good idea at first, but upon seeing how much N/a motors were, they said i should just sink the money into the motor i dont have yet, that also isnt even in this country yet.

now what im looking for is what you guys think. Should i try and find a cheap N/a motor to get the car running, or should i put money into the motor to try and get it into the car so I can drive that car? Should i try and do both?

whatever you guys would do just let me know...

thanks
chris

Just wait it out.

Don't bother with the N/A motor, if you where going down that route you should of asked & paid for a more expedited shipping. It would just be a lot of work and money wasted, you will never make anywhere neer the money you spend out on the N/A motor to get it up and running.

let me guess yo bought a jdm motor? you understand that it's gonna need to be rebuilt most likely right?

Meatkibble 04-30-07 03:03 PM

The motor i bought( now this is gonna sound lame) is actually from a friend of mine...its a 0mile race motor. My friend works at a tune shop down here, and when the company who shipped it the first time sent it it got damaged in shipping and its still probably gonna take a lil while longer to get here.

VacavilleFC 04-30-07 03:11 PM

how much did you pay for it?

you need to supply better information when you ask a question or we have no clue what the hell is going on and assume your a noob

Meatkibble 04-30-07 03:20 PM

hah, its ok, i dont even know what is going on with my motor, he says its a race motor but i havent seen it yet.

I payed 200 for just the block, he wants 800 for the top end kit...

VacavilleFC 04-30-07 03:34 PM

umm bro i'm gonna be completely honest with you for 200 he is selling you crap, for the other 800 he's putting it in your ass.

theres no possible way he's selling you a brand new "race" block for 200, the "block" is the most expensive part of our motor, new housings alone go for over 1k, plus the rebuild kit which is 1300 .new rotors are somewhere between 500-1000.

a used jdm motor with 50k miles on it shipped from japan is 1500 shipped and they need to be rebuild with is about 1500 dollars, i'm gonna call Shenanigans on your buddy, your you have no idea what your talking about.

what are you referring to when you wera talking about a top end kit?

Well, as i said, i havent seen it yet which is the other reason i was thinking about going N/a till the motor is done, but the guy is someone i goto school with, talk to, hang out with so i trust him for the most part. I know the usual pricing for the motor and thats why i was stoked about it...Ill see when i get it, hell it might be a lawnmower engine that i dropped 300 on...which would make me an unhappy camper.

as far as the top end kit goes, its gonna be the lower and upper intake manifold, throttle body, and the exhaust manifold with turbo.

I have a feeling deep down that this is gonna turn out bad, but as of right now i trust him enough to not pull out of it.

And hell, if i get the motor and it does turn out to be a full race motor would it be sweet?(hope is free:P)

VacavilleFC 04-30-07 03:53 PM

no i agree it sounds like a spectacular deal thats why i'm concerned

the upper and lower intakes with the throttlebody can usually all be bought together for like 100 bux from ebay or the forum for sale section

the exhaust manifold probably can be fround from 20-100 dollars, and since we have no clue the condition of the turbo if it's stock maybe a 1 or 200i in good condition, if it's new yeah i can see paying 5-600.

my advice to you since you have no idea what your buying, I would be take pictures of all the parts he is going to sell you and show us before buying. otherwise i'm sorry i believe your being ripped off

Suiicidalpenguin 04-30-07 04:34 PM

I dunno your friend sounds schetchy. I havn't taken my RX-7 past N/A yet but I have dealt with a lot of Muscle cars and when someone says it's a "race engine" thier bending you over and ramming it to ya. Everytime I have seen a suposedly "race engine" it's something that has been used in some racing and has had the absolute crap beaten outa it.

Meatkibble 04-30-07 11:08 PM

Well thank you everyone for your input. I really appreciate all the help you guys gave me...

When i find out whether or not the engine is in, I plan on taking pictures of it, as well as take it home for safe keeping :-P As far as top end kit goes, i again, plan on taking pictures before i buy.

Thanks everyone
chris
