Logicon Removal
 

Yeah, I searched around a bit but nothing seemed to really do it for me.

I removed my radio surround (Without so much as a crack, in under two minutes). Removed the face plate and trim from my radio so it'd be out of the way. Unscrewed the logicon, pulled out the two harnesses in back...but there's that damned third one that's plugged somewhere back in the dash. I got under the pedals, and reached up trying to feel for it but I couldn't find it. So I removed the cluster surround and the four screws for the cluster itself...no go. Got under the pedals again, felt up behind the cluster (Just barely) and I know I got the speedo cable off. There are two more harnesses from what I can tell....how the hell do I get these off? I tried to pull the cluster out but it won't go with those harnesses still attached. This is pissing me off because I have the new logicon, it's getting colder outside (and my fan only works on one speed) and..well..the logicon in the car is just dying. I need to get it replaced!

Basically...how in hell can I unplug that third harness or get my gauge cluster out to do it that way?

I don't mean to be a pain, y'all, but I need to tackle this by tomorrow because of school >.<

Er...well that part is simple.

I need to remove my logicon.

I can't seem to do it any other way, so removing the gauge cluster is probably a must.

Can't remove the gauge cluster because I can't find a way to remove the harnesses from the back of it.

nav bar on the left and look section 2 and it should have the logicon in there it should tell you how to remove it

If it goes up behind the idiot light/clock cluster...why don't I just pull that out and pull the plug?

I'm not sure what difficulty you're having. I pulled it out of an 87 and it was simple. You bull the plastic bezel off, might have to take the radio out, and the screws holing it in should be in plain view. Pull it out, disconnect the wires, and uh, yeah.

Because the damn wires are tucked in there good!..I feel for ya on this one ..Personally If you have to Do it Quickly..I would be there with Cutters and A Soldering Iron.If not You have to get at The connector.I Tried to tackle gettin one out of the 88 but It was in Midwinter..another Idea..I THINK..Trochoid..he has a link to the FSM on his Sig.If you look in the Manual,I'm sure you may be able to Find out More info.But regardless..best of Luck.

Pulled the plastic radio/HVAC/Vent surround.

unscrewed the four screws holding the logicon unit in.

Disconnected 2 of 3 wiring harnesses (Two on the back of the unit itself)

Can't get at the third wiring harness because Mazda is rather silly.

So I don't understand what YOU are saying. Pictures coming...

By the way, my soldering skills are about as good as my tolerance for automatic transmissions....

oh wait, I know what you're talking about. It's that little black part on the lower back corner, and the wires just dissupear into the dash. right? The connector is on your fan, or AC, or something. It's under the dash on the passanger side.

Yeah, don't do what I did. I just impatiently clipped the wires. Now I gotta go back and solder them back together.

Yep..same with me..I got Two but the Third..Well I gave up(it was Cold..remember winter!)..

The cable is only 18" long...it can't be connected to my A/C or my fan.

The logicon, by the way, is what controls your A/C....and the fan.

It's the black wire on the left (The logicon is just hanging there) that disappears on the left. It's an 18" long cable with a fat ass harness at the end.

According to my Haynes manual...you're supposed to remove the gauge cluster so you can reach through that opening and get at this harness. Problem is, I spent three hours trying to get the gauge cluster out. No success.

I managed to remove the third harness by going in through the driver side footwell and reaching up and unplugging the harness that way. I think I mentioned that in the other thread. Just put tension on the third harness from the logicon side so that when you reach around back, you know which harness is which. Having friends help you is probably advised.

Well there's the flaw in the grand design, already... I don't have friends! :rlaugh:

I was under the pedals for an hour trying to do it this way. I removed the foot air duct (one screw and it pulls out) so I'd have better access.

Where in hell am I supposed to be looking? I reached up and felt the cable but I couldn't move any further or..well..anywhere at all, for that matter, no matter how hard I tried.

Read and follow the Logicon removal instructions in the FSM. If you don't have the FSM, click here and download it in PDF format for free. Mazda's method works perfectly, it was actually easier than I thought it would be.

Did anybody check out the link to the teamfc3s board? It tells exactly how to get the logicon out.Also as NZ mentioned the FSM tells how as well. Most of you are going about it all wrong, and the Haynes manual is wrong on this one. OK you need to remove the cover that has the windshield defrost vents in it it sits between the windshield and the dash. There is a plastic cover in the center that covers up the screw holding it down.It's hard to get off without breaking. After the screw is out it is held in with some strong metal clips. You have to pop/pry it out of these. They said to take off the window trim I didn't but I can see how it might be easier. Once you have that out you can look through the windshield and see the plug. One thing I would do they didn't which makes reassembly easier is once you unplug it tie a long piece of string to it and the pull it out.Then take the string off but leave it snaked through the dash. This way when you go to put it back in you can tie it back to the cable and pull it back up through the dash to where it plugs into easier. I got this out of the FSM These are condensed instructions.Please read thier's or the FSM as well. Also had a friend whose fan only worked on high.Turned out to be the power transistor on the blower motor it's self.

I'm going to try the FSM method tomorrow.

when i had to pull mine i had to pull the dash at the same time, so it was rather easy to find the connector. heh wee . . .

Yeah, I'm not pulling the whole dash, but thanks. I don't think there's a single broken piece of plastic in all of my interior except for the idiot cluster surround which ALWAYS has one crack in it at least.

The FSM method worked. The string trick is kind of stupid and got more in the way than it helped. Regardless, it's all put back together and I didn't break anything.
