Lil Help?! Started car- giant puff of electrical smoke-broke it.
Hey y’all, I’ve searched- still searching, but in the meantime... my NA 88 FC. Went to start car and while turning over let out a noise that sounded like an intake backfire (Poof, not pop) then a substantial amount of smoke came out right above the trailing coils. Them smoke was very clearly electrical. Now the car runs horrible, won’t idle, rough below 2500/3000 rpm, will sometimes rev up when you throttle down but seems to be in no rhyme or reason. The only thing odd I see is the electrical smoke on leading plug #2 (see pic). I’ve replaced the trailing coil, and tried unplugging TPS, and MAF. All which seemed to make it run different but not well. Haven’t ran into this one yet- rx7s always got something new for ya. Any thoughts, advice? Thanks! https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...f7c4baab6.jpeg |
Hard to say. You did mention that there is smoke on the leading plug. Leading plugs are on the bottom. Do you have your wires configured properly?

I'd replace the plugs and wires too, just to be safe. That plug does not look happy, and neither does the plug wire.
