Leave tranny in for engine change?

Gonna do the engine rebuild in a couple of months, gettin' everything together so I'll actually have FUN doin' it...How many of the do-it-yourselfer's out there have had success with leaving the tranny in the car while pulling the eng, is there any wierd problems you ran into? How did you brace/ stabilize the front of the tranny so everything lined up on the reinstall?

IMHO it's so much easier taking them both out together....

Makes everything easier, like aligning the clutch when you have to connect the gearbox/engine again.

But yes to answer your question I have left the tranny in there once didn't run into any 'werid' problems though.. at all, quickly realised its easier to take them both out together though :)

I would like to pull the engine damn near vertical with a chain hoist (I realize I'm gonna have to pull it forward from the tranny couple of inches). Only one guy's done this? Where's Kevin?

bump to get RETed's attention...

I pulled both of them out at the same time.......just do it slowly and have at least 2 of you do it so you can clear the front end.

NO, I'm determined to do it with the tranny in place!!! Guys have done it this way, I know, I'm just looking for somebody to say "make sure you watch out for this...", or "I had to do such and such to line everything back up..."...ahhh...the ramblings of an incoherent mind....

Umm ok dude.. theres not really anything much to it... fairly straight forward, but I _have_ to ask, why are you so dead set on keeping the tranny in there?

You will need to move the engine forward probably 50-100mm to at least get the input shaft of the 'box out of the eccentric shaft/clutch.

Have fun alinging it all again(if you mess with the flywheel/clutch plate that is, if you don't have to DON'T will make your life considerably easier) :)
