leaking clutch slave cyclinder

Hi,
how would I know if my car really does have a clutch slave cyclinder?
I just bought the car and the owner told me that it was leaking.
I brought the car to a transmission shop and the guy said it was fine. He quoted me $90 to fix it.

Now the guy didn't look to happy when he saw my car. Did he just tell me it was fine so that he wouldn't have to mess with it?
He opened the brake fluid and told me that since it was full my slave and master cylinder was fine.

Thanks

some mechanics are just grumpy, that explains the look. the slave cylinder is located at the top of the tranny and looks like this.

if it's leaking, you will see fluid coming out of it:D

does the clutch pedal feel okay? if it does, i wouldn't worry about it.

its a lil hard to put the car in gear. any input?

If it has a manual transmission, it has a slave cylinder. Look at the fluid reservoir in the engine bay. Its attached to the top of the clutch master cylinder. Follow the single metal tube. It will mate with a rubber tube, which continues down to the top of the transmission bell housing. When the rubber tube ends, that part it attaches to is the slave cylinder. Is held to the tranny by 2 bolts. Its not difficult to remove and replace. A new one will cost about $40 and if you are a half way decent mechanic, it shouldn't take more than 1 to 1 1/2 hours to replace and bleed the system (just like bleeding the brakes if you've ever done it).

haha I mean how would I know if my car really does have a leaking clutch slave cyclinder?

well Ill jack up the car tomorrow and look.

THanks!

still looking for my Haynes manual somewhere in my room ...

is the clutch release cylinder the same thing as the slave?

Yep...

Very easy and cheap fix. Go to your local auto parts store and buy a Slave Cylinder rebuild kit, and depending on the condition of the inside of your cylinder you may need a small hone (mine needed one). I remember something being a real pain in the ass about it, but I dont remember what that something was... Anyway... It's a straight forward process, parts will cost you under 20 bucks, so no sense in having a mechanic do it for $90 :)

edit: actually, I'm close by, in Norwalk. If you need help drop me a PM.

You can get anew slave cylinder from NOPI.com for like $20 Much easier than reabuilding, all you have to do is take the old one off and bolt the new one on. After that, bleed the system.

got a number at work last night for you, can go to any Autozone.

Kit: BECK/ARNLEY WITH PISTON - 071-5235 $14.99

I dunno, I guess I'm more of a fan of being a mechanic than being a parts changer ;)

I still have the original slave on my car, got 188,000 on it now, I rebuild it (along with the master) every 25,000 to 30,000 miles, kinda like preventative maintenance. Scotchbrite pads take care of any crud in the bore (unless you've got water in the system and allowed it to rust).

koukifc3s 06-26-04 04:48 PM

thanks a lot man :)

koukifc3s 06-26-04 05:01 PM

now would the Nopi one be ok? It's 20 and the one at Mazdatrix is 50.
Which one is better?

koukifc3s 06-26-04 05:50 PM

Well I went and looked at my slave cylinder and it doesnt seem to be leaking anything.

The master cylinder reservoir is also full.

I then took out the fill plug for the tranny and it was about 3/5 full going straight down the hole with a piece of paper.
Now the car was jacked up on the front about 7 inches.

Is that enough tranny fluid or am I really leaking some?

THANKS :) :) :chicken:

mazdatrix and nopi are the exact same. theyre both the Tokico OEM part.

Sorry to dig up the old thread...

but, at LEAST that means i am searching instead of starting new ones!!! anyway, on to the problem! I am currently experiencing clutch problems. 2nd gen turbo s4. my transmission shifts great for being a piece of shit. some times, the pedal will stay depressed, but i can flick it back up with my foot. ive been driving like this for about a week now (im working about 93-95 hours a week) and will have a few days off in the near future. the fluid was low, but i replaced it a couple days ago. The pressure feels fine now, but i will check the fluid again tomorrow. i dont see much fluid leakage from the master cylinder, so i was thinking it would be the release cylinder. Any ideas? the clutch shifts fine, but the pedal does not return unless i flick it with my foot.

Thanks guys,
Ryan Shannon.

ps...i looked in the fsm troubleshooter, but didnt say shit about the pedal staying depressed....just says, "replace". replace what?!
