Just Gut the Cat or Get a New Dwn pipe
 

hey guys, m birthday is coming up soon and im strapped for cash again so im using this opportunity to get some stuff for my fc. i was wondering if just gutting the first cat on the downpipe will do the same thing as buying a new downpipe. will a new down pipe give more flow than a gutted cat? (this may be stupid but im just trying to save getting the wrong thing for my bday when i could basically do it myself) thanks.

A gutted cat will flow better than a non-gutted one but, not as good as a straight pipe.

I've got a RMT downpipe I bought off ebay I'm trying to unload. About 2000 km's on it before I bought the full RB set-up. bought it for 100 canadian I think. I'll let it go for like 50.

Off the stock exhaust manifold, is the NA "downpipe". It has the precat, and racing beat sells a cat-less replacement NA "downpipe"

Replace the pre-cat with a downpipe. It doesn't matter if it's NA or turbo, they both have downpipes that replace the pre-cat available (mine has one).

Headers aren't worth it unless you've got ported exhaust, or better yet, turbo rotor housings.

You mean turbo exhaust sleeves?

That is the only difference between the NA and Turbo.

A header will yield benefits on even a stock motor. The stock manifold is a joke when it comes to flow. The headers will give a noticeable gain up top.

If you are going to do it, do it right the first time.

Racing Beat N/A Downpipe and presilencer FTW

Why are these blanket statements about a header always made, when Racing Beat, in describing their collected header say the following:

"For optimum performance gains for this application, we recommend that a header be used on an engine configured with a carburetor intake system. For this reason, we suggest another suitable configuration for use on a fuel-injected engine is the Racing Beat Catalytic Converter Replacement Pipe with Presilencer combo. These components offer comparable performance gains, quieter performance and a price advantage as compared with the header/presilencer combination. These components replace only the stock exhaust components located between the stock exhaust manifold and the Y-pipe."

Does Racing Beat just not want to sell headers?

I've had both. The RB downpipe/presilencer + catback, AND (before my motor blew) I was running an RB header to presilencer + catback. The butt dyno did not register any difference between having a header as opposed to just having the downpipe, and bypassing the cats. It's my experience that the cats are the most restrictive part of the exhaust, and I only had one.

Bottom line though, who would want to keep the stock exhaust manifold when you can replace it with something that is designed to flow better, for the same cost of the NA downpipe/presilencer combo. I did not notice an increase in exhaust noise when I installed my header, either.

And guys, it's singular... header. Not headers, at least not on a rotary.

There is a difference in cost. If I'm not mistaken, the RB Header still needs the Presilencer to connect to the Y pipe. So total cost for (S4) Header and Presilencer would be $434.00 versus $305.00 for the Down Pipe and Presilencer.

Oh shit, didn't realize that. I pieced my Full RB system together over the course of a year, and managed for it to come out to a little less than $750 IIRC.
