just got new wheels but they hit brake caliper

i just bought some wheels and they are 16x6 1/2 and they hit the brake calipers on my 1988 turbo 2, the wheels i have on there right now are the stock turbo ii wheels that are 16x7, i bought them off my friends girl friend and she had a 1987 rx7 na and they fit fine on her car, why are they hitting the caliper on my car and not hers , do i need spacers to make them work and if so can someone please post a link to the correct ones, i only put them on the front so far, didnt try the back yet

The '87 N/A has a smaller diameter rotor (9.8"-10.9").

c0rpse 05-20-15 10:28 PM

those are extremely ugly anyway. If you are looking for cheap rims I suggest XXR or Rota. They usually stick to rims that look good on japanese cars.

invinciblejets 05-21-15 07:23 AM

Turbos have 4 pot calipers up front.
Yes you need spacers.
Or just run stock wheels that's my vote at least.

Those wheels are all terrible.

So does the 1986-1988 GXL, all convertables, and the 1988 GTU. You must've gotten it off the SE model (4 lug typically).

pfsantos 05-21-15 08:21 AM

^ I agree, a base or SE with a five bolt swap (but original single piston calipers kept).

Devon300zx 05-21-15 02:04 PM

yea i know they are ugly, only paid 50$ for them, planning on getting better wheels soon, any one know i 5zigen fno1r-c will fit on a stock turbo ii suspension without spacers

front 17x8 et 25
rear 17x9 et 15

Rob XX 7 05-22-15 06:02 AM

5-8mm spacer is about all you can go on stock studs. Make sure your spacers are hub centric.

I wouldn't use the cheapo wheels you purchased.

You have bad taste if you think XXR or Rota are aesthetically bad rims. Of course they are junk rims, but as I said, IF he was looking for something cheap. Rota and XXR both basically specialize in reproductions of the most popular Japanese rims. I had XXR before, slammed a huge pothole, rim was fine. (didnt have my glasses by accident)

This looks decent with the XXR 002

Love this FD! Yes they are Rotas, not the real rim.
Attachment 753773

I think this FB looks good with some Rotas.

Here's some Rotas that don't look so great.

I've seen that happen to "real" rims too. As I said though, I can only speak for XXR. Beat the living shit out of those rims, never warped or broke. I have heard the horror stories of rotas. Its anecdotal but I also know a lot of people who run them with sticky tires, and theyre fine. I know a few who drift on them as well. So I really don't know if they had a bad year or something, and thats where the pics come from. Who knows.

Rob XX 7 05-22-15 01:21 PM

spacers will cost more than the wheels

fc323 05-22-15 06:04 PM

Heyyy those wheels look pretty nifty, ill buy them If you decide to sell them

I just said cheapo wheels. I hate how RX7's have become piece of shit cars with piece of shit rims on them, just cheapens the cars. That is my opinion, you can do whatever you'd like to yours.

When I had my first RX7, I ended up with Rota's, felt that they didn't match the coolness of the car and ended up BBS RS and FN01RCs.

I never said they looked bad, (not to be mean, other then the FB, that FD and that FC where not pleasing to look at).

You must be on the same page as I am, then don't recommend them.

They do, but does that make them great? Are they not cheap and heavy?

IF you're looking for something to put on the car to make it "unique"? I personally think that it makes them look crummy myself. Just tossing rims (poor fitting rims even?) does not a make that much better. I rather leave the stockers (or nice factory stockers like the S5 wheels?).

You are entitled to whatever you want to use.

Two things here.

1) Just because your wheels didn't break, doesn't mean wheels can't break. I used to smoke for years and I do not have cancer. That makes smoking is not cancerous? You see what I did there?

Not saying other wheels won't have issues, but a one time scenario doesn't count.

2) Why are you driving without your glasses?

See I know that cheapo feeling you are talking about exactly, but with rims like the ones in the 1st post of this thread. At least with the XXRs or Rotas the rims look exactly like rims that are $500 a piece. So I dont get the cheap feeling from them.

The FB was my favorite too, but the FD looks really nice to me, like a japanese drift car type look, the FC looks decent with XXR 002, but that pic not really.

Do you not understand that this person is already looking for cheap rims? As I said, who knows whats up with Rotas. However for about 5 years straight, Sportmax 002 (XXR now) were the most popular rim out there for drift cars. They can take abuse. I am not saying they are known for reliability, im just saying, a lot of people liked the old school jdm look, and the rims held up fine under extreme conditions. However, yea they are heavy as fuck.

I totally agree there. I absolutely love the S4/S5 turbo rims. If I had a tII I wouldn't even change the rims.

I pointed out my experience was anecdotal correct.

Lost them and had to get home.

My absolute dream rims. Watanabe. Don't like the lip but otherwise perfect.

Before you buy rims I would look up a rim/tire fitment thread for rx7s or something. You could get nice rims, but wrong size tires. Rims that are too small, too big etc etc.

here is an example if you like the outcome or not:

I can't tell if you offer this as a "good" example or "bad".
I don't understand why one would obtain larger than stock wheels and put undersized tires on them.

I just used it as an example showing that you have to calculate rim size/tire size otherwise you can end up with a goofy look, and a shitty handling car.

Not my style at all. I dont think it looks bad im not gonna lie. Just not really my style. I prefer 15/16 old school looking rims.
