just got back ot the site, had a question about XTD clutchs

so i have had my 91vert 7 for about 3years. i haven't done a clutch swap since i got the car so i think now would be the right time b4 anything happens. i was looking around and found brands like ACT,Exedy and XTD. i was wondering if anyone had any personal experience with XTD. any info would be greatly appreciated.

btw its a 91 n/a vert.

walken 11-22-09 06:09 PM

xtd 6 puck was trash. never had a problem with exedy. act may be overkill for stock, but that is up to personal preference.

epic 11-22-09 06:54 PM

so all the XTDs are not good then or just the 6pucks? i was leaning to getting exedy but still not sure. the engine is stock, only mods are intake and exhaust. nothing crazy. i want to make the engine last as long as possible.

farberio 11-22-09 07:25 PM

I bought an XTD. It slipped from day one and I removed it a couple months later. Stay away.

Oh, and read this.

I guess that I'm the only person around that has had good success with XTD. I have one of the sprung 6 puck clutches with the race pressure plate in my turbo first gen. I have dynoed over 300 rwhp and have not had any slipping problems at all. Nice firm grip. Just lucky I guess.

Run.

i ran a 6 puck xtd clutch kit for over a year on my modded TII and never had one problem at all...took the engine out and the clutch kit still looked good and now its in my friends TII and still doing great with more than 45k miles on it....maybe i was lucky too?

dawicka2 11-23-09 07:04 AM

XTD is shit...... I had a stage 3 6 puck in my car for about 5 thousand miles before it was trash.

Well technically it was trash from the begining or it would have lasted longer. I then stepped up to an act stage 3 six puck and have had no issues at all.

I didnt listen to farberio when i put mine in, saving a little bit of money..... NOT at all worth it.

Get another clutch. I speak from experience.

either i got lucky or u guys didnt resurface ur flywheel or didnt break it in properly....i speak from experience too and can go ride in a car that has the stage 3 clutch right now....

Talking about parts in stages = ricer.

Your car probably doesn't make any torque.

haha im very aware of that....but saying that mine didnt slip because i didnt have any torque is stupid...the op has a n/a vert, im sure my TII makes more torque than a non turbo....everyone on here knows that rx7 lack alot of torque

I broke mine in and resurfaced my flywheel. How about you read that link I posted and then come back and try to tell me whats what.

Turbo II Rotor 11-24-09 12:48 AM

But his didn't break so they must be awesome!

JCurry 11-24-09 09:27 AM

the op said to post experience with them...y would i lie for some random company...buy wat you wanna buy!

t2ae 11-24-09 09:43 AM

i've had the xtd 6puck in my car for around two year making 310whp, i've had times where it would slip just from getting hot but all in all its been great.

bad 83 11-24-09 02:43 PM

Slipping clutch isn't usually from the clutch disk failing, 90% of the time it's from a pressure plate not clamping tight enough. Mine buddy was running the same disk that's in my Turbo first gen. But he was running the stage 2 pressure plate. He was slipping before he hit 300 rwhp. After we did a TII swap in his first gen, I told him that his pressure plate would not hold up. It didn't. I repeat. I guess that I have got lucky too.

farberio 11-24-09 03:12 PM

^ Which is interesting, because when you read the link I posted above you will read that XTD's pressure plates are re badged pressure plates that do not clamp at their advertised rates. In fact some of them clamp at less then stock rates!

If you have a puck clutch though, there is less area to apply that clamping force, which is why some people get "good XTD's" even though that probably means the pressure plate and clutch combo is fine for their output level.

Of course, those that get "good XTD's" usually get 3-6k miles before the disk goes as well.

They still will make torque. Don't be

Torque still will mess up a clutch.

I'm sure my NA makes more torque then your TII :).

Anyhow.

XTD is shit. I installed 4 of their kits in my lifetime all of them slipped and the person who had me install them (he was getting warranty parts from XTD) spent thousands with me trying to get it right (I don't warranty aftermarket parts).

All of them slipped but the one that was the best was when he got a different pressure plate and one of the puck discs.

Still though, it's not worth the money. If you have an NA, just stick with stock or a quality brand like ACT.

Bwek 11-24-09 06:10 PM

I have an XTD stg 3 6 puck in my car so far ive done 10k on it beating on it cayuga touge etc not bad so far

but id agree that the pedal pressure is the same as stock and that the pressure plate is a bit soft

yerRx7 11-24-09 07:05 PM

truthfully epic since your car is pretty much stock. exedy's organic clutch will do just fine. act is also a good clutch too, but if you plan on beating on your car often then i'd suggest act. oh yeah and dont forget about centerforce clutches too. but between the two clutches i'd go with act. xtd overall is just plan bad. better safe than sorry even though some of the guys have had good expirences with them. there's really no need to be using 6 puck sprung/unsprung clutches on a lightly modded n/a motors.

lucky87T2 11-24-09 08:00 PM

Southbend makes some great clutches for Mazda/Ford. I have ran two of them, even the stage one clutch grabs so hard with pedal effort near stock.

I had a first gen Probe Turbo, the car was pushing 23psi out of a T3 60 trim (well over 300WTQ) and had no problem with second gear dumps, powershifting etc. , hell on my second probe I didnt even break it fully before upping the boost, still had no problems whatsoever!

Check them out
