Just got it... already got problems...

I just bought an 89 GTUs (supposedly) i dont think its a true GTUs but well leave that for another time...

My problem is this- it starts up fine and runs great, seems like some power is missing could be low compression as its a very old engine (150,000 miles). ANyways...once its running for about 25 minutes the check engine light comes on and the car wont go past about 25 mph and it sounds as if its gargling gas or something... sorry thats the best explanation i can do on the noise... the RPMs wont go up and the engine feels like its dead, all this while its beeing floored.. however all i have to do is shut it off for a minute and start it back up and itll be fine again like nothing happened, but then in 25 minutes the light comes on again and the same thing happens... any ideas what this could be?

thanx in advance for any help at all....

Ouch thats crappy, when I bought my car it seemed like alot of the power was gone.. couldn't even rev it past 5500 rpm.. The cats were clogged... maybe check that.

sounds like the oil meterting pump. DO NOT DRIVE till you fix it.

check the codes.
http://www.1300cc.com/howto/how2/codes.html

if you must drive it, and the code is the pump. get some 2 cycle oil, and dump in 1 oz into the gas tank for every 1 galon of gas.

it won't stop the no power, but it'll save the engine from getting ruined untill you can fix it. which is what you are doing now.

Thanx a lot guys... im gona go take it to the shop now and check everything out....

Bad metering oil pump. You need to replace the pump, but PRAY that you can get one used. You don't even want to know how much they cost new.

DO NOT drive until you have replaced the pump.

i would think TPS

when mine went bad it would run ok for a little when first started...then would crap out...all this time it still had a perfect idle...

pull the codes and see what you get...Scott has a great tutorial at www.130cc.com

good luck!

icezero09 11-30-02 04:15 PM

Yea... it gave my the code for the MOP so im going back to the guy who sold it to me cus hes got another one hes selling... gona get the pump from that one and put it on mine and hopefully it will be all good... ill let u know what happens...

Erik 11-30-02 06:06 PM

cool...glad you found the problem...

icezero09 11-30-02 06:29 PM

Bad news.. the guy wont let us have the pump from the other car, lol, and i have to replace it.. so i checked out the price at Mazdatrix and it was $1100 there... WOW... anyone know where i could look for one? Im gona have to start working overtime this week...

Damn this sux, but at least i got my FC, guess this is just my little welcome to the club... lol

Scott 89t2 11-30-02 07:01 PM

just remember the 86-88 and 89-91 pumps are different when you go looking.

Turbo Timmy 11-30-02 07:08 PM

Premix! lol

kep0ne 11-30-02 08:48 PM

89 has the elec. OMP system right? or is it mech?

im ditching my OMP for premix in a week or so....if 89's have a mech OMP ill sell you mine.

might also want to check www.rotaryresurrection.com he has a lot of parts for sale. i think he goes by the name of hypntz7 on this board.

other than that, check the for sale section here, and on teamfc3s.org FREQUENTLY...i scored a n1 dual for 100 under list from the for sale boards there.

anyway, hope you fix your problems soon...

The '89+ pump is different from the earlier pumps. They cannot be swapped. The 89+ ECU also REQUIRES the MOP, so you can't just remove it either. Your only choice is to replace the pump or move to a standalone ECU. Check eBay for the pump...

New RX7 owner here. What do you guys mean by pre-mix? Oil in the gas?

MtnRacer 12-04-02 03:43 PM

Precisely. Putting 2 cycle premix in your gas tank, and disconnecting your OMP is actually great for your engine. Unlike regular motor oil, 2 cycle oil is designed to be burned in the combustion process, and your engine will enjoy better apex seal lubrication, cleaner emissions, and some weight reduction if you take out your original OMP and install a block off plate! ;) The only negative is, you have to put oil in your tank everytime you fill up. Otherwise, it's not a terribly bad idea IMHO.

Do a search on the work "premix" you will get a ton of hits. The thread that has the poll in it is very informative. Like 4 pages worth of info. In short...the rotary needs the apex seals to be lubricated seperately from the rest of the engine. So it has a OMP that injects oil into the chamber for that purpose. The 89+ cars have an electric pump that has a tendency to fail. So you mix in 2 cycle oil into the gas tank and let the fuel injectors do trhe work.

www.rotaryresurection.com parts section, about 20th item on page. $150. I say jump on it!

I say premix. Who knows what condition any used pump is in. It could be the same as the one you've got.
