Just got a '90 vert. Great ride, some minor bad news.

Wow, the seller did a nice job detailing this for me. The boot for the top looks as if it has never been used.

Too bad for me I got a speeding ticket on the way home. The cop felt bad for me and reduced the fine, but I intend to go to court pleading "guilty with explanation" so that I can keep my perfect driving record. This thing is just so much more powerful than my 1999 2.0 New Beetle.

Finally got a chance to test the CD player -- no go. Can someone recommend a good cheap source for a replacement? The rest of the stereo is fine.

Who wants to welcome me? ;)

Parastie 03-31-04 12:57 AM

From one vert owner to another, welcome!! :D

A cheap replacement or a good replacement? A cheap one is walmart, a good one is just about anything but walmart. I've seen them there for $50.

Also, you might just play around with yours for awhile, mine didn't work at first but after several attempts (and some cleaning) i got it to work.

Again, welcome!!

My $100 kenwood deck has been very nice, mp3 player included. Its like a $140 deck Im told, but got it on sale.

I highly recommend a quality aftermarket unit. You can keep stock headrest function and controls even with this. I also recommend a set of components for the front for those interstate blasts with the top down (trust me on this). I have audiobahn 6 piece components, 6.5s, 4s, and tweets with a passive crossover. Sound is about as good as mids get in an FC.

Congrats and welcome. Vert owners represent!

Kenteth 03-31-04 01:53 AM

You can plead guilty with explanation? Thought was only guilty, not guilt or no contest?

RRTEC 03-31-04 02:01 AM

Just keep rescheduling the court date and then show up and pray the cop isn't there. if he doesn't show plead not guilty......there you go they have to let you off

Kenteth 03-31-04 02:33 AM

you have to go once to plead not guilty, and then reschedule the next actual court date?

RRTEC 03-31-04 02:47 AM

no just call and re-schedule a couple times then show up.

introVert 03-31-04 02:59 AM

out of curiosity, are written/mail'd pleas appropriate for every state, or only in CA?

MARTIN 03-31-04 03:51 AM

in order for the speakers to work with an aftermarket radio, dont you have to bypass all the amps?? mine were already done that way when I got it, and the same goes with the coupe that I had.

Bukwild 03-31-04 07:03 AM

welcome to the vert family

flojomojo 03-31-04 07:23 AM

Parasite: what did you do to play with your CD player? From the outside, it looks like all I can do is insert and eject discs. How did you clean it?

The rest of you lawyer wannabes ;) : I will have to show up for court, but if I'm pleading "guilty with explanation" the officer doesn't have to be there. I've read that the usual judgement in Maryland for the kind of thing I did is a reduced fine and no points if you show up as if you care (and I do). I don't know what the law is in other states, but I'm sure there's a wide variety.

Thanks for the warm welcome! We've got some insomniacs on this board! :p:

Parastie 03-31-04 07:32 AM

Well, with mine i could insert a CD and it would either turn off or eject the disc (after spinning it up and trying to read). I used a Can-O-Air and sprayed inside the CD player. Make sure the can is right side up or you might make it worse. :D

Insomniacs? I was on my lunch break at work, now i just got off and plan on playing with my car until the sun goes down (isn't that a song?). Oh and uh...it's parastie, not parasite... :bigthumb:

Oh yeah! You need to post pics of your car!

flojomojo 03-31-04 07:42 AM

Thanks Parastie I will squirt some compressed air into the slot. There's some clickiness coming from inside, and I'm sure the little gears are brittle plastic and could well be stripped after 15 years. No worries though, a rush of clean air can't hurt and might help. That would be the best solution.

BTW your lunch hour is in the middle of the night? Are you in Texas right now, or on some military deployment or other international travel? Or just a night owl like me. :p:

Parastie 03-31-04 07:54 AM

I'm texas, i work the night shift at Texas Instruments. So my lunch hour is from 12-1 in the night. Fun fun...

Welcome and Congrats!

My Vert is a '90 and it's currently at the body shop getting a new paint job - Blaze Red.

I'm in Arlington, maybe I'll see you on the road. My job takes me to DC at least once a week.

Also, I have the original CD player I took out of mine. It was working when I took it out after I bought the car. If you can't get yours to work, I can sell it to you cheap.

I'm actually in Maryland. I'll change my profile since there seems to be lots of us and the precision matters.

I'm still reeling from how fast and helpful everyone has been. This is a great community. And I might just take you up on the offer for your old stereo unit. Gotta do some research on how the ones look, fit, and work first!

Thanks again to all. This car is already costing me more than I expected, but the tips (rebuilt wiper switches? sweet!) are well worth it. :D :D :D

Tofu and Fong are both up in MD too, I've in northern Va. And we all have Verts Red (Fong, I think), White (thats mine) and Blue (Tofu).

croffeyc, what area of Arlington?...I'm like right there. Let me know if you want to talk verts some time. In any case, maybe I'll see you guys at the Mazda Rev it up event in Laurel, MD.

croffeyc 04-16-04 09:39 AM

I'm just west of Ballston, near the intersection of George Mason and Wilson Blvd.

I love to talk verts. I'm getting a bit obsessive about it. I may have just found a donor car to do my auto to 5 speed swap. I should know for sure this weekend.
