Just bought a vert now for power?
 

Hi guys, I just got an 88vert than I'm having the water seals and apex seals replaced on. I'm wonder of ways to give the na motor some more pep, I was thinking headers. Do you guys have any suggestions for getting some more power?

you could do a
Street port = cheap, faster reliable
Half bridge port = expensive but affordable, faster, less reliable
bridge port = expensive, faster less relaible
or a spherical Port = most expensive, fastest, least reliable

street port sounds good, do you know of a good shop that provideds that service? I'm pulling the motor out for new water seals anyway so I would like to do it then.

Pineapple Racing has very nice templates. Mazdatrix has a nice video that walks you through the process. You'll spend $80 for the templates and the carbide bits for an air die grinder will run you another $100 or so.

You could also ship the block off to RotaryResurrection and have him do the whole shebang.

unless you want to pull the engine apart and rebuild it yourself (which i don't recommend unless you have either done it before or are working with someone who has) you should send it out to have ported for you. the job will get done right the first time and almost all rebuilds come with warrenties. street porting costs between $300 and $500 if the whole block is sent there as opposed to just the housings since they take it apart and put it back together for you. if you want to have all new seals put in u are looking at $1200-$1400. because of the age of the car i highly recommend a full rebuild.

you should do the suspension first!

If you need to tear apart the NA engine to rebuild it you should seriously consider a 13bt swap. You will start out with more power stock than the NA engine which is exactly what you are looking for since you asking about more power. If the 13bt stock power isn't enough for you then you will have a MUCH better platform to build from for more power than the NA setup. 13b-rew or 13b-RE would be the good platforms to start from as well, but require a little more work than the 13bt which would basically drop right in.

I was in the same position you were in a few years ago. I rebuilt the NA engine and pissed some money away on mods for it. Less than a year and ~4k miles later I wasn't satisfied with the power at all for the $ invested so I did a 13bt swap and got rid of the fresh rebuilt na engine. Best decision I ever made for that car. Sorta wish I went 13b-RE or 13b-rew though.

Figure out what your goals are, and what you want to use the car for. Figure out a budget. Build the car once and build it right or you'll wind up kicking yourself in the end.
