just bought a rx7

hi ive just bought a rx7 its not in bad nick with 23k on the clock and payed £800 for it does that sound a good price? just want to no a few things under the bonnet, what the air pump is for? and what the small exaust is for that runs down the whole of the left exhaust pipe. thanks

23k kilometers?? Wow. 800 British pounds comes to $1500 U.S. The Kelly Blue Book value is $3800 to $4500 in my area. Either you got a really good deal or a junker. Have you had a mechanic look at it? I can't imagine anything being wrong with it with so little on the clock.

The air pump is for emissions. The RX-7 adds extra fuel to the intake air to prevent knocking, the air pump adds extra air into the catalytic converter to burn the extra fuel. It pumps the air through that "small exhaust" you described.

Rotary basics: Rotary engines are super sensitive to overheating, oil changes, and knocking. Knocking shouldn't be a problem because of what I just described. If the temp gauge gets to 3/4 or so, pull over quickly. Don't wait for an exit. 1/4 is normal for 86-88, 1/2 is normal for 89-92. Change your coolant on time or early, use only OEM thermostats. The engine intentionally burns about a liter of oil every 1500-5000km, so check your oil from time to time. The engine should be redlined from time to time to keep it clean of carbon deposits. High rpms will not greatly harm a rotary engine. Other maintenance items are also important, as with any car.

Enough browsing through these forums or asking questions here should uncover anything you may want to know.

Do you have any pics of it, that sounds ridiculously cheap. Is it a turbo?

Mine was cheap too, 86 GXL in good shape, 20,000kms on the rebuild and it cost me $900 canadian :)

you want to know if that's a good price after you already bought it? lol, but ya thats not too bad at all

ya sounds pretty good.......but it doesnt mean anything till we see some pics!!!!

also, ur chances of knocking is low if u dont add boost. so be like me, SUSPENSIONS FTW!1

snwboard8907 09-17-06 09:33 PM

if u remove air pump and gut the exhaust so it's straight empty pipe, would that make it start knockin? i'm thinkin bout doin it, my cats are prob. clogged to shit.. emissions arn't a problem, there isn't testing in ohio. btw, i got a 86 N/A

ericgrau 09-17-06 10:24 PM

Nope, removing the air pump shouldn't be a problem. But it will send your emissions down the toilet (specifically unburnt fuel and carbon monoxide will spew out). A straight pipe might lean it out a little, but probably not too much. Ask someone who's done it who has an A/F meter to make sure.

You'll also need to do a search on 5th and 6th ports. They won't open without any exhaust backpressure. You'll need to buy or make another way to open them or you'll lose 30HP.

Hey, half my family's in Ohio. :)
