Just bought a '87 GXL, and need some info...
 

Well... I was really looking for a 1st gen, but I found this car and couldn't pass on it... bought it for $600, and it runs/drives fine!!!
Here's my questions...

1.) It leaks oil from the pan... how hard is it to replace the pan gasket?

2.) It's an auto... What can be done with the auto trans? and what trouble can I expect from it?

3.) The secondary injectors don't seem to be working (no "hiccup" at 3200 which I'm told is normal, and it seems weak above 3000). What would be the cause/solution?

I really know VERY little about rotaries... I'm VERY new to this... are there any good websites out there I can check out to learn more about 'em (besides this one!!!)

nice car!:cool: oil pan gasket is a pain. your going to have to remove that bar underneath it that the motor mount is attached too. i would go ahead and get a haynes manual to help you out a bit on learning your car. or a factory service manual.

definitely pick up the haynes manual, i just picked one up from the auto store 3 dayz ago and it's an amazing source of help for u, even tho i think this site is even more amazin since there's experience and knowledge combined and comin from words of those who done it

Hey, I just got an 88 saturday, the hiccup is usual at 3800 RPM's, my secondary injectors werent coming on at all, the previous owner thought something was seriously wrong with the car cause after 3800 it would just bog out and not go anywhere so he sold it to me for so cheap $1500 with 14,000K on a mazda rebuild. But anyways, one of my injector caps, (the electric connectors), was loose as hell, and the wires were backing out of the cap. That fixed my prob, I also here that maybe your ECU isnt telling them to trun on, but I dont have any idea why it would cut out so soon at 3200, see if you can ease on the gas, and I mean really ease on it, like in second gear and see if you can get it to run up to like 6K. Also, to make sure that it is that your injectors arent coming on, pull the caps off both the secondary injectors and take her for a spin-if it runs the same they arent coming on, but if it runs worse I havent an idea whats wrong. Try cleaning up some of your grounds on the engine, and adding one from the block to your chassis, and or one from your negative terminal one the battery to the chassis. I feel your frustration, but nice ride for the price, too bad its an auto. Good luck.

This should be a 6 port engine. You need to read up on the 5th & 6th port actuators. It sounds like yours are stuck. One of mine is and I plan on diving in to fix it next month.

The 6 ports very well may not be working... But you don't loose *THAT* much with them stuck closed... And it would really be gradual, instead of a sudden wham..

The secondary injectors do come on at 3800 as intbr said... So and problems at 3000 may not be related to that..

You may need to change your spark plugs, maybe wires..

I haven't actually driven the car yet, just going by the description that a friend of mine (whom I trust unconditionally) gave me when he went to look at it for me. You see... the car's in Michigan, and I'm in Tennessee... but that problem should be solved soon... My friend has a truck and trailer, and said as soon as he can, he's gonna bring it down to me (hell it was gonna cost $700 to have it shipped..... that's $100 more than I paid for the whole car!) I'm getting really anxious!!! This will be my first RX-7!

Hey nice car!

One thing that you can file away under "might need to know someday"....

A friend had the same bra on the front of his car, it had mesh screen over the inlet on the front. The car ran a little warm around town but at highway speeds the engine got way too hot!!

The cause was the bra not letting in any air as the mesh and high speed caused the air to just go up and over the hood or under the car.

Air is lazy and won't travel through the mesh once you are rolling at a good clip.
