Jspec S4 Emissions?

I'm currently working a s4 turbo II Jspec swap on my s4 convertible and have plans of keeping the engine stock and running it through CA emissions testing. Any obstacles with this idea? Does the Jspec motor have a EGR like the US models?

J spec s4 IIRC does not have egr port on Lim.so it will fail the visual test.

that's what I was looking to find out, I suppose I could get a US LIM and Exhaust manifold with the EGR components, but would I need the ECU as well? Has anyone been able to pass the sniffer without the EGR if visual is overlooked?

It should pass the sniffer as the egr is not equipped in s5's and they seem to pass no problem.if you have US engine harness then use US spec Ecu.not too sure if you can use the j-spec Ecu and harness though.

Yes, it can pass just fine. EGR systems are primarily to reduce NOX emissions. Rotaries usually don't have issues with NOX unless it has severely advanced timing or is running lean due to a vacuum leak. You could just 'attach' the EGR so it is visually there. Testing the functionality isn't done on the dyno-test.

None of the jspec ecu's will control the EGR solenoid, but the 'functional' test of the egr is applying vacuum manually. Thus the ecu has nothing to do with the manual test.
Although, I'm not sure if jspec housings have the egr port in the first place.

Worst case, you smog it as an S5 swapped engine and hook up the check engine light to light up and go out after a few seconds.

the EGR will fail the visual, but it has no impact at all on anything coming out the tailpipe. not sure about the turbos, but the NA's only have EGR in 5th at cruise

Good info guys thanks, how do you get the chek engine light to appear?

with an S4 ECU, you need to just rig a light that comes on with the ignition, stays on for 30-50 seconds and then goes out. most people use a timer circuit.

with a US spec S5 there is an output, so you just need to hook a bulb in the warning light cluster to it.

oh yeah the S5 warning light clusters have the check engine light.

and to get an EGR valve on your T2, you can either hope the smog guy doesn't look for it, point to something that looks like an EGR valve (the twin scroll valve might work), or use a US lower intake manifold and EGR valve.

like we said the EGR has no effect on emissions, the rotary is itself a bigger EGR valve than the valve could ever be

Thanks for the help guys, once the car is completed soon I'll work in getting the light to work, and claim its a s5 newer engine.

US LIM with EGR valve connected to the vacuum rack is the easy way, and route I chose. Smog tests in many areas do not require an actual check of EGR operation; just a visual check that it is there. Passing the sniffer test doesn't require an EGR.

Someone mentioned the split air solenoid operation in 5th gear, which means the lack of one on a JDM ACV doesn't matter. You actually end up with MORE airpump airflow to the main cat because its open in lower gears.
