What style bulb was used in them??

I dunno why you guys waste money on those things. Not only are they uselessly dim, you can't flash your high-beams any more.

Jason its stupidly obvious. Its all about the JDM'ness of them. :rolleyes: And the 50hp they add.

lol reminds me when I had my 97 prelude and everyone was getting those "cool" jdm fog lights for them. They where only 500 bucks :eek: If you got lucky they where 400 and people where buying them like they where going out of style, lol. THats why when I first looked up how much a pair of stock fogs costed for my s4 I relized that its all about supply and demand.

For some reason my high-beams dont flash thru the FTPs.

Maybe I'll rig up something similar with some parts from the electronics store :D

I got mine for like $30, and I think they look cool at night. so, for $30 it was worth it. plus, my old, normal FTP's were really crappy, so I needed new ones anyway.

I dunno, I think they're pretty cool. they even look better during the day because of the whiteness, and kind of texture thing they have.

BTW, I'm normally not a fan of buying little useless things like this, but I'm happy I bought these.

plus, you can wire them up so they flash when you flash the normal brights.

where do they wire to?

wire them wherever you want. our US spec cars don't have the plugs for them. you can make a seperate switch, or splice them into the headlights, or turn signals, or whatever.

I don't think anyone's going to notice you flashing 5W marker lights at them... ;)

meh... who knows, you might be able to see them during the day :D

I made a custom FTP Light setup to fit in there. I'm making a photo write-up as we speak. Expect it sometime in the near future.

My FTPs were so ugly I just took them out. I'm driving around without them untill I find a new set. :-p

so can u just rig a bulb to us FTP's and be like hey JDM FTP's...500bux and 50hp!

to flash we have to wait for the lights to pop up then flash! if you at the JDM ones to you yank versions you'll have nothing at all :cool:

Haven't had any problems, and I've been running this way for 5 years. Keeping the lights on is a higher drain on the electrical system though.

I bought a pair when my stock ones on my ultra low mileage 10AE decided to fall out one day. The plastic had gotten so brittle that they cracked and fell out on some of the rough Detroit roads. To fix the dim bulb issue, I dremeled the hole slightly larger so that the biggest of the wedge bulbs could fit and still use the same socket. It's about as bright as the parking lamps...good enough for me.

That's because they are parking lamps. ;)

If you want other drivers to see you comming, rig the fog lights as DRL's.

You need to make a minor correction to your otherwise fine how-to. The Japanese "FTP" lights are not daytime running lights, they are simply the front parking lights that come on with the taillights and instrument lights when you turn the switch to it's first position. This is instead of the dual-filament bubs US cars use in the front indicator position for this task. Having a whole 5W of output, they're totally inadequate to be used as daytime running lights. :)

Um i did my whole settup for free cuz i rigged up my own and i can still flash my lights... and since noone answered my question i just went out and picked up some 921 bulbs and they are NOT uselessly dim... they look way better than the stock 194 bulb. AND i'm not doing it for the JDM LOOK YO... i hate that... i'm doing it because i like the way it looks on the car and feel that the FTP's should be used for more than they are. And in the year i've owned my car i have NEVER once flashed my highs to pass somone... stupid 80's safty crap... NOONE flashes highs in america... it just scares people... lol

And its not free if you have to pay for bulbs :-p

It's pretty obvious my post was aimed at those you'd actually paid the ridiculous asking price for the real thing (since that's what the thread title says), not some ghetto rig.
If you had genuine Japanese lenses, you would not be able to do that. They have a solid black plastic backing. Again, my post was aimed at those with the real thing.
80's safety has nothing to do with it, I dunno where you get that idea. Every car made in the last 30-40 years has had this ability. And they're not just for passing, that's just a name. There are plenty of other reasons to signal other drivers this way.

Almost as bad as Americans learning metric, eh? :D

So if anyone is making their own set of these lights out of the Aspec ones... USE A 921 STYLE BULB!!! much brighter!!!

So are you going to tell us how you did it? How did you mount the bulb holder? What did you use for a reflector? What wattage is the bulb?

To answer your questions
How did i mount them... basicly made a lip for the mounting tabs to hold onto... if you look at the sockets you'll see what i mean.

What did i use as a reflector... nothing at the moment... but most likely silver/crome tape will work

What wattage is the bulb... 921 style is ~18/19 watts as apposed to the 194 style 5 watt bulbs

NOTE: *921 bulbs have the same size wedge as a 194*

1 Go to your local junk yard and find standard 194 sockets... or you can rip the ones out of your storage bins (thats what i did)...
2 Dremel a hole out for the socket but make sure you have enough room for the tabs to lock in.
3 If your going to use a 5 watt 194 then your done... If not go to your local auto store and pick up a 19 watt 921 style bulb.
4 If your using a 19 watt 921 bulb then your gonna have to make the hole bigger so the bulb will fit. The only downfall of this is that the tabs on the socket wont fit very well... i got lucky and had a small lip for them to hold onto... otherwise youll have to glue them.

I would prefer to use a larger bulb, such as an 1156.

1156 would probably melt the lenses..lol....

Sounds like you need an upgraded Electrical System...and I'm not just talking about the Optima Red you are running. ;)
