Well, here we go. This is the layout I've chosen for my v-mount/cooling pak. If you have an engineering degree or first hand experience running a v-mount, then your opinions on its potential performance are welcome. Otherwise, I'd appreciate you keeping your speculation to yourself.
Not everything is welded up solid yet, but I don't see laying it out any differently. Also, it looks like I'll have to either get new oil cooler hoses or have the Cork Sport ones modified. |
So, today I cleaned up the garage a bit and decided to try the welder with stainless and aluminum. The stainless went well. I welded my stainless O2 bung into my exhaust. I still need more practice before doing anything that would be a show piece, but I can make two pieces stick together well. I couldn't do anything with the aluminum because I need a larger 1mm collet. I'll probably snag one tomorrow when I go get some more flat stock for the front end, from Bitburg. I also took measurements for some silicone couplers that I need.

So I've been having to put time into my Lada lately. I am finally driving it.
I managed to get the last fuel bits ordered last night. I ordered a Aeromotive FPR (40-70psi), the necessary fittings, and the premade -6 AN hoses to connect everything. I received my Rising RPM fuel rails...they're quite nice. I also got a new transmission mount and a mount kit for my Haltech. If all goes well, I should have a running car next week. Gotta get cracking on the fiberglass and wiring to make it road worthy. |

Started working on getting the fuel tank installed. Got the fittings installed on the tank and the hard lines. Working on tweaking everything so it fits properly. Here's a pic of the tank.

So far today I got the fuel tank installed, the transmission mount, and driveshaft, and cleaned the top of the motor. I also bled the clutch line. I might go back out after dinner and install the exhaust. More pics later.

Yesterday I got some welding done on my Lada, then ran out of wire. So I flared the rear brake line and got it finished. That little guy was a pain in the ass to get flared. I also managed to sell my rear seat setup, so I need to get a list of parts together and make a final push to make sure I have everything. Air filter and oil cooler lines come to mind.

50psi max I made the same mistake and bought those compression fittings. They might work and not leak but I bought some weld on -6AN fittings likes these: JEGS Performance Products 16262 JEGS Steel AN & NPT Weld Fittings |
Interesting. Summit says 50psi, ANplumbing.com says 250psi and Earl's site says nothing at all until you open the actual catalog, where is says 50psi. I'm contacting ANplumbing (where I bought the adapters) to find out WTF is up. I'm going to give them a shot at recifying the situation. The really crappy part is that if I have to weld on new fittings, I have to drop the lines back out and I hate having to weld stuff that has to be water (or fuel) tight. Also, it takes me a minimum of a week to get stuff shipped to me.

Just got a reply from ANplumbing. They said the 50psi limit is old data and that the fittings I got are good to 250 psi. He also mentioned he's been in contact with them about correcting the catalog, but apparently the new one is still a year off from publishing.

I love where this project has gone, I might have to steal that cooling pack idea, because it is an absolute PITA to remove/install my radiator currently. Can't waint to see this thing running! |
Well, I only have two more flares to do before the brakes are completely done. I will be thrilled to have that finished.
I am also looking forward to getting all the parts I've ordered, in the mail. My FPR, fuel fittings, -6 fuel lines, Shorai battery (Lithium-Iron, weighs 2.2lbs), and properly sized air filter. |
Brakes are done and bled. I definitely need to adjust the clutch pedal as well...it feels like I have about 50% of the stroke is free play. I added a reinforcement to the cooling pak. I need to get the welds ground down and all of the surface corrosion off so I can paint the brackets. Today I'm getting the ducting material and I'll make the battery box for the tiny Shorai battery.

So this weekend was rather successful. Higgi was over for the weekend. We got 99% of the Haltech wiring done. The fuel system is 75% done right now and should be 100% done by the time I go to bed. I'll leak check it as well. I also got some badass ducting material...it's a thin, light, rigid aluminum composite sandwich material. It should do a good job of insulating the IC from the radiator and oil cooler, as well as properly channel the air.

Piping is pretty much done. Just gotta throw on some clamps. Forgot my fuel can when I went to work this morning, so no gas to test the fuel system. Tomorrow I'll knock that out and I'll knock out the two wires I need to run. Then the harness and exhaust are going in. After that...lots of double checking connections and such, LOL.

Are you going to be fanless? If you ducted the left and right side from the rad up you could run dual fans in a vented hood and really get sum flow through there when it gets hot.

No, there are factory FD fans on the bottom of the radiator.

The radiator is a CX Racing FD v-mount radiator with factory FD fans. I can try to take some more pics of the radiator mounting when I pull it out tomorrow.
Today I leak checked the fuel system. It needed some attention in a couple spots, but is good to go at the highest pressure my FPR and pump are capable of. I drilled and tapped the FD UIM to accept the 3/8 NPT Haltech intake temperature sensor. I also finished prepping the Haltech harness to go into the car. Tomorrow is time to get the exhaust installed and the harness routed. Then I'll tidy up some things with the v-mount plumbing and get everything clamped. Once all the fluids are filled up, then it'll be time to get the Haltech calibrated and then the moment of truth. Don't worry, the camera will be rolling for that. |

Things didn't get as well as planned this weekend. I ended up spending most of my Saturday helping another forum member with his FD. Then yesterday was spent recovering from my over indulgence on Saturday night. So, this afternoon I'll get the starter in and the last couple connections done for the factory harness. It's gettin' there.
