JDM MOTORS ARE THEY WORTH IT? HAS ANYONE BOUGHT ONE FROM THEM? hELP!

i JUST RECENTLY JUST BLEW THE MOTOR ON MY TURBO 2. STILL RUNS BUT IDLES RUFF. CHECKED THE COMPRESSION IN THE BACK WAS AT 95 BUT THE FRONT READS NO COMPRESSION AT ALL. THE CAR DOESN'T EVEN OVERHEAT BUT NO POWER AT ALL AND I HAVE TO KEEP MY FOOT ON THE GAS OR IT WILL NOT IDLE. WHEN I DRIVE IT THE RPM'S ARE RUNNING ALL THE WAY TO 5 TO 7 RPM IN ORDER FOR IT TO RUN OR IT WILL BOG OUT. SO I THINK THE MOTOR IS SHIT. SWITCHED OUT THE COILS NO VACUUM LEAKS. BUT I WAS WONDERING IF THE JDM MOTORS ARE WORTH BUYING. IF ANYONE HAS BOUGHT ONE FROM THEM WHAT KIND OF COMPRESSION DO YOU GET OUT OF THEM? THE JDM SWAP WOULD COST ME 2000$. BUT IF I HAVE IT REBUILD MY FRIEND OVER IN EL PASO WOULD REBUILD IT FOR 3000$ AND UPGRADE THE TURBO, PUT 750CC INJECTORS ON SECONDARIES AND A WALBRO PUMP. MY COMPUTER IS CHIPPED UP BY G-FORCE ALREADY. IT GAVE OUT ON ME WHEN I WAS RACING A MUSTANG ON THE HIGWAY. THE COOL THING ABOUT IT WAS I WAS SMOKING HIM WHEN IT GAVE OUT, THEN HE WANTED TO RUN AGAIN AND I COULD NOT CAUSE I THOUGHT I HAVE ANOTHER VACUUM LEAK, BUT IT WAS THE MOTOR THIS TIME. O WELL . RX7 TURBO'S ARE FAST AND THATS THE ONLY REASON I WANT TO PUT ANOTHER MOTOR.

POWERED BY DEL MOTORSPORTS ON LEE TREVINO, IN EL PASO TX. HE IS THE KING IN REBUILDING. I KNOW THIS FOR A FACT. I USED TO LIVE WITH HIM. HE ALSO OWN'S A 11 SECOND 10TH ANNIVESARY THAT HE IS ABOUT TO SELL FOR 15,000 DOLLARS. IS ALSO CURRENTLY TEACHING CLASSES AT SOME TECH SCHOOL FOR REBUILDING ROTARY MOTORS.

WAS DOWN THERE LAST MONTH, THIS GUY BOUGHT A MOTOR FROM ATKINS ROTARY. TOOK THE CAR TO MY FRIEND DEL AT THE SHOP. I SAW HIM TAKE IT APART IN THE MORNING MOTOR WAS OUT. CALLS THE GUY BACK AND TELLS HIM ATKINS HAD CLEARANCES WRONG AND FUCKING THING GOT BUILT WITH A SCRATCH UP ROTOR. 'I WAS THERE'. GOT THE OKAY FROM THE GUY TO REBUILD IT AGAIN. THE NEXT THEY I SHOW UP AT THE SHOP AND HE ALREADY HAD PUT IT BACK TOGETHER. CALLED HIM A MONTH LATER AND ASKED DEL WHAT COMPRESSION WAS READING WHEN THEY CRANKED IT. HE SAID 113 THEN AFTER IT GOT BROKE IN IT READ 133. THE CAR HE HAS NOW THAT HE IS SELLING FOR 15,000$ HAS HAD 6 MOTORS PUT IN BECAUSE HE WANTED TO LEARN THE BEST WAY TO TUNE THEM. THE MOTOR HE HAS IN THERE NOW IS PROBLY THE LAST ONE CAUSE HE HAS FIGURED OUT THE WAY TO TUNE THEM RIGHT. O WELL ENOUGH WITH MY BOOK PEACE...........................

i dont see a need for a jdm motor.. rebuild the one you have. getting a jdm motor is a gamble, you might get it over here with no compression and have to rebuild it anyway... to me its just not worth it.

I'm not gonna try to read that; reminds me too much of a lame ebay auction.

JDM motors are worth it because they *can* be in good condition and the price is pretty good in most places. Some importers gouge, others are fair, etc -- just gotta find the right price.

What importers have people had experience with? good or bad, I and im sure others would like to know who to buy from and who to avoid

same here

but why not just rebuild your current it will save you from having to gamble with a importer and you won't be able to sell your current engine for more than 200 bucks

but if you do decide to sell it i'll buy it

stay far away from shane of rotaryworks. I bought a jdm motor with a stuck side seal. I had to rebuild it. jdm motors since they have "low milage" are only good for rebuilds imho.
good luck.

NEVER BUY FROM www.osakajdm.com They are the worst, two out of three bad motors....

calrx7 07-25-06 04:14 PM

haha my motor is blown too, xcept my rear rotor is fucked up. imma buy a jdm block to replace the back housings and rotor but im gonna buy new apex seals and whatnot. if ur gonna look for a jdm engine, juss look for a block, not the whole thing. it will save u more money :D

I don't know how they are with rotary motors but the seller thats selling a 13BT +tranny+ECU+wiring harnesses for like $1400 is the same seller that sold me a JDM motor for my Stealth with supposedly "40k" miles on it. Other than excessive carbon buildup (cured by a decarbonization) the compression read over 200psi (facotry is 170-210) on all cylinders and the oil pressure is always high. The intake manifold and other parts inside were unusually clean too. On mine though they cut random hoses and stuff which required me to use some parts from my old motor. Either way I've been running it for a month now and redline it more than 3 times a day and it still runs like a champ.

What source did you use KhanArtisT?

It was probably easier to delete you post than correct SEVEN HUNDRED LINES OF CAPS........bah, blasted caps lock turn the bloddy thing off.

RotaryEvolution 07-25-06 08:22 PM

yes i know but it was mainly a suggestion, if people don't realize it is annoying then they are likely to repeat themselves.

Check and see if rx7club member Japan2LA has any turbo Jspec engines. He has a good rep around here. I bought an S5 Jspec from him and mine is running great. My engine was right at $1200 shipped.

It may be too late to rebuild your engine cheaply. Seeing that you lost compression, you probably chucked an apex seal. That can ruin your rotor, housing, and turbo unit. I would suggest just getting a Jspec engine, and if you dont trust using a Jspec, just give it a rebuild before you throw it in. Its much cheaper to rebuild them before they have a major failure. Good luck

Sorry, it was good ol' Ebay. Got the motor for 900, came with 2 bad plugs and a hole in the valve cover though. Warrantys really the only reason I went that route, the one on ebay selling the whole package had a 90 day warranty also.

classicauto 07-25-06 09:54 PM

Then biggest thing abou buying a used motor is that....its a used motor....

I would never buy a used engine without being able to see it first hand...i.e. the supplier is local to me and it will be a money in one hand engine in the other transaction. Granted there scammers out there, this isn't my point.

Nevr buy one over the net if for no other reason then you can't see it first hand, because no matter how reputable the seller, they may have a bad one slip through.

The only way to ensure a decent chance at getting a fairly good motor is to go there, pull the plugs, jump the starter, check compression, run the shifter through the gears, etc.

BUT - if everything checks out alright even at that it doesn't mean the thing won't let go 5,000 kms later. It just means its gonna work now. And the chances are just more likely with a rotary because the who torched/sazalled the thing out had no idea what it was anyways so right off the bat it stands a lesser chance of being kept in great shape.

After my experiences - they are great!!.....for useable rotors and housings.

If you want to hope its gonna run - buy a used motor
If you want to hope its gonna last - rebuild it
