I've been meaning to change my fuel filter but. . .

Everytime I go to autozone to pick up oil or whatever, I thumb through the little book, find the fuel filter part number, and they NEVER have the one I need. So, where to find a fuel filter for my '90? Maybe Pepboys if someone could let me know before I drive out there.
Whats a good filter to buy? Duetche? Mazda dealer OEM (prob $$$) or what other brands do you guys recommend if makes any difference?
I'm also thinking about adding a second in-line filter up in the engine bay; has anyone done this and it there room for one? It was a pretty easy mod on my '84 GSL, however, I notice the new filters are bigger and might not take well to just hanging there in space. Could I use a filter like the one that came on my'84 it was small and plastic I wonder if it would hurt fuel flow...thanks!

Got mine from PepBoys. It was a Purolator. Don't remember how much though.

No. Do not use the small plastic one. The higher pressure for the fuel injection may burst it. If you do put a second filter in make sure it is rated for the higher pressure. I think most/all are metal.

Why would you want another fuel filter. Works fine with one.

Because a second fuel filter is just a sensible precaution; I heard it recommended on some guys 1st gen site, but I had already done it since I knew it wouldn't hurt. That engine lasted ran for me from 147k to 178k and I hardly knew anything about rotaries other than they could rev really high!

Pepboy's has a much better selection of stuff then Autozone. The only redeeming fact about Autozone is that it's open 24 hours.

A fuel filter is like an oil filter to me. I only use the OEM Mazda ones.
