Interior idea...save weight but still streetable...

Ok i am going to be using the 87 as my scca racer as well as a 2-3 times a weeker to work.. Well my interior carpet isn't the best and i really don't want to replace it. I was thinking about removing all the carpet and the bins from car and then cutting the LOWER portion of the interior door pannel off leaving only the top part to rest my arm on. Then painting the floor and the bottom part of the doors black... anyone done this yet? If so have any pics....IS it a good idea or not? Thanks

any time you start pulling interior peices, its gona look ugly. no way around it. if you want it to look nice its gona cost you weight.

yeah I am doing a similar thing with my doors for my vert. I am going to make them out of the top piece and lower in aluminum. I will have pics by this summer

Taking off just part of the door panel is going to look wierd. The metal underneath is not very attractive. Plus most of the fasteners go around the perimeter, so it may flop around a bit if you cut the bottom off.
the carpet will save you some weight, the door panel mod won't do much of anything for you.
Good luck

You could always just take some sheet metal, cut it to the size of the door panel, wrap with something (fabric/whatever) and use that...

Then you can use whatever you want and it won't look terrible...

Good idea, I had a dream last night and i think i am going to leave the door pannels but gutt the carpet and bins and paint the flor black.....thanks for the input. I think the door pannels are in too good of shape to cut up anyways....i'll post pics of the progress.

ya know the fiberglass door skins realy dont weigh that much maybe 8lbs each depending on trim. i doubt you could fabricate something any lighter that looked decent.

Do you realise that the door trims weigh practically nothing? Cutting off half of them is not going to save any weight, it'll just look like shit. So will removing the carpet, but at least that weighs someting...
