Intercooler pipe Questions...
 
Hi, im doing a swap and wanted the best intercooler piping. I want to spool fast, and a ton of CFM's to play with. My RE engine has a stock intercooler piping with the diameter of roughly 2.5 inches. Theres an ebay special intercooler selling for $100 with shipping brand new. Dimensions: 31x11x3 with a 23'' core. Pretty big, with 3'' inlet and outlets. My question is, if i was to build my set up for three inch piping, will i boost slower? I heard some where that big pipes will allow for more CFMs while reducing boost pressure meaning youll get more power out of less boost with sacraficing spool time.:dunno:I mean, im running a moderately big turbo im not looking to spool it like a stock one but... you guys understand:lol:. Im not trying to lag. I want to spool as fast as possible. My car is being built for... Everyday driver,AutoX, and occasional Drag race. HP goal of a little over 400hp 11sec 1/4 mile. Reasonable for an Rx7. Thanks.

For 400HP (and up to about 600HP) use 2.5" plumbing. 3" piping takes a bit longer to "fill" and is generally a waste. Also harder to route through the engine bay.

you can still keep the 3" intercooler core but run 2.5" piping as said and use hose reducers. also keep the piping as short and straight as possible. just because the piping is smaller doesn't mean it won't take as long to fill if you have 20 feet of piping in your engine bay. my piping for example is about 3 feet total length since i have the IC inside the bay, not in the traditional spot behind the front bumper.

nice nice. i see what you mean. I can use the big intercooler with reducers. This way with that intercooler, i can get the best air intake temps because of its size so it will cool more, and keep the 2.5'' pipes to spool....perfect perfect lol. im also going to try and keep the pipes as short and straight as possible for the reason you mentioned. Thanks guys. you learn something new everyday.
