Intake install question (air pump hose)

Hello to everyone here,
This is my first post, although I've been coming to this forum for my 2nd Gen questions since I got my '90 GXL in the fall of 2002. This is a great community, and I'm very appreciative of the help and advice that everyone here is always willing to offer each other.
I recently purchased a Weapon-R intake for my GXL, but I've been fairly nervous about installing it since it's the first time I've touched this car's engine (other than fluid checks) since I bought it.
My question is, I have seen others install intakes without having anything attached to the air pump, and others which have a hose going from the pump to the filter (these were apex-i intakes).

This weapon-R intake has a hole in the intake pipe, and a hose, but they are much too small IMO to be able to connect to the air pump.

Is it necessary for me to connect the aftermarket filter to the air pump? Any advice anyone may have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! If you need any further information, let me know, and i'll do my best to provide!

The small air filters that they sell at Pep Boys worked fine for me. About $10.

yup, get a open air filter and pop that baby on top of the air pump. As for the weapon R intake... you should try to ebay it, they suck. You usually see Weapon R stuff on civics (I know I'm gonna get ripped a new one for that, but its true). I suggest Bonez http://www.rx7.com/store/rx7/fcintake.html I personally have this on my 7 and it works great, no issues. if you get the racing version it comes with a filter for the air pump.

Thanks a lot guys, I'll pick up a little breather filter for the air pump before I install the intake. I'll probably stick with the weapon-r for now and see how things go, I can always try something else later on if I find it's really bad.
I guess I'll seal up the hole in the intake pipe as well.. I'd imagine it's better for the air flow to not have any escaping through that hole in the pipe :P

Thanks again for the advice, I feel a lot better about going forward with this now.

Yup- got the Bonez one on the 'vert-

A little pricey, but they are very install friendly, with the
bracket needed to re-mount the afm to the right inner fender. Complete instructions as well. The Bonez kit comes with that little open element filter for the pump as well.
