intake how-to

hey guys
you may remember the thread i made awhile back about which filters are best. im debating between the k&n cone filter or the k&n stock filter replacement. i want to get the cone one but i dont know how much mechanical no-how it will take to install it, seeing how i have next to none. can anybody give me a basic write up on what installing an aftermarket cone filter entails? thanks a lot!

It doesnt take much mechanical know how if any. To put it on yours you will need an adapter to make it fit the AFM as I see you have a series 4 in your profile.

I just bought one of the Ebay specials.. comes with a cone style filter and a PLASTIC adapter (I wasn't too happy).

1) You unbolt your stock airbox from the MAF (silver box thing with giant intake hose attached),
2) use the cork gasket they give you (and maybe a thin layer of sealant, I didn't).

3) Bolt everything back together, and build yourself an airbox.

If you have an air pump (I do), you will either need to find a small filter to use in the end of the hose comming from the air pipe. Else you have an extra pipe sucking dirty air into your engine. I'm going to cut a hole in the back of my filter and attach a fitting and hose to that, or maybe delete my pump until emissions time.

any good suggestions on an airbox??

NZConvertible 07-03-03 02:34 AM

If you want a cost effective long-term replacement filter, get the panel. Because it's reusable, it will eventually pay for itself.

If you want a performance gain, get the pod, as the panel will make no difference in this respect. It's the airbox that's restrictive, not the filter. Just make sure you also install a heat shield and cold-air duct with the pod, or most of the potential extra power will disappear in the engine bay's hot air...

sectachrome 07-06-03 11:15 AM

....bump....

about the heat sheild and cold air duct, i know what the heat sheild is but ive never seen one that you can just buy, theyve all been hand made. is there somewhere i can buy one? how much? and the cold air duct, are you talking about like the head light cover duct? cause theres no way i have money for all of that.

from what ive read (never tryed making one YET) its not to hard to make. but it sholdent be that hard just use your brain. it dosent have to be top notch it just has to block hot air from the engine bay.

sectachrome 07-07-03 11:21 AM

is the heat shield absolutely necessary? because ive seen some nice 7s without one. what would make more sense? the cone filter without the heat sheild or the stock panel filter? sorry if im being repetative or whatever, i just wanna do the job right.

1987RX7guy 07-07-03 11:32 AM

If you are putting in a cone filter into the engine bay then you should get a heat shield.

I myself am planing on selling a kit that will be a good alternative to this setup. It is basically the Check point intake but done for less cash.

DEZERTE 07-07-03 01:00 PM

my heatshield

i made this out of some highquality aluminum, 1/8" i forget the guage of it.

DEZERTE 07-07-03 01:08 PM

its not letting me post 2nd pic, sorry.

ilike2eatricers 07-07-03 03:15 PM

does you heat shield only have holes in the front?

blind 07-07-03 07:22 PM

heh it looks like it why there isnt a scoop on your headlight if you gonna have holes there.

DEZERTE 07-07-03 11:44 PM

it has holes, i was just going to cut the front off, but i figured drilling holes woudl be more fun.

Rx-7Blazin 07-08-03 12:37 AM

im making one right now accept i just goes all the way to the front of the car and its not gonna have a top it will go to the top of the hood with some kind of sealer like rubber or something like that

jester1341 07-08-03 09:40 AM

i plan on placing my K&N FIPK inside......yes "INSIDE" the stock box. the "ram tunel" will still be setup and i want to add a way for air to hit that and maybe a nother one[dryer hose] from the front of the box to the grille or get a headlight scoop.

sectachrome 07-08-03 10:59 AM

isnt the the stock air box restricting though? hence the point of new new filter?

Rx-7Blazin 07-08-03 06:19 PM

yup its tiny and has air silencers everywhere which create turbulance, doesnt seem like a good idea cuz the cone filter is there to get more air and in a stock box it would probly be better to buy the stock replacement and put tubes to it cuz its probly more restrictive with a cone filter in that box.

Stealth Audio FC 07-08-03 08:08 PM

i say if you're lazy... just drop in the K&N filter and save yourself all the trouble of making your own heat shield. The K&N should suck in more air than your stock filter. Also your airbox is the best heat shield anyhow without having to drill holes and make rubber stuff.:) I'm lazy.
K&N should run under $50 U.S.

Rx-7Blazin 07-08-03 10:07 PM

accually you wont feel near the difference if you keep your stock setup with a k&n cuz your not really getting that much more air your maily filtering it better

Considering the shape of the connection between the airbox and the AFM, I can't picture how you're going to do this, but there's not much point anyway. It's the airbox that's restrictive, not the stock filter. There'd be no gain.

jester1341 07-09-03 10:14 AM

so even if i gut the airbox and run an extra pipe[dryer hose] it will still be more restrictive....damn.......thanks anyway:(

1987RX7guy 07-09-03 10:17 AM

The stock air box is what is restrictive. :-/

You may be interested in the intake that I am making. If the weather and FEDEX co-operates with me I could be done in a week or less. Check out the links in my sig. :)

i bought the k&n panel filter and recharge kit, if you were wondering. i dont think i wouldve gotten much performance gain, if any, especially without the heat shield deal. i can always do it later. hopefully if i ever get the rb cats (drool) ill do it. thanks for all your replies guys.

jester1341 07-09-03 06:17 PM

-1987RX7guy

i would definatlly be interested, but would want a description and pics as everyone else has said......will i be able to use the cone and adapter i have already bought?......what is the difference between the two packages?

BTW...awesome avitar!!! wait that deserves another........hehe
