Installing Ignition Switch
 

So I'm having an intermittent starting problem with my S5 Turbo car. Turn the key to start position and nothing happens, not even a click. I do that a few times and it cranks strongly and starts, no problem. Battery is fairly new and has a good charge. Since the problem is intermittent, it will be difficult to troubleshoot. Before it becomes a non-intermittent problem and leaves me stranded somewhere, I'd like to replace the key components of the starting system. The ignition switch likely will be the first item.

Here is my question. Apparently you can either replace the entire assembly--steering lock and switch--as a unit or you can replace just the internal switch. I assume that's the case since both the items are listed in the parts fiche. If so, how does one go about removing and replacing just the internal switch. Clips, screws, or what? (Accessing the switch is not the issue.)

The ignition switch is basically two parts, the key cylinder and the electrical contacts.
The contact plate is on the end of the assembly and held to the frame with two screws (IIRC...could be three)...should be self-explanatory when in hand.

I have a good used OEM switch (electrical contact piece) if you would like it. Let me know. The contact assembly comes right off the ignition tumbler with a single Phillips screw. It is pretty straightforward to swap out.

There are 4 electrical connectors to unplug and a couple small clips and the contact assembly comes right out. Once the dash trim is off it takes 10 minutes.

To get off the entire ignition assembly off you have to remove the cluster binnacle and dremel some slots into the non tamper screws to get the key cylinder off of you wanted to swap the entire assembly.

Yea a single zip tie will hold that position switch in place. Anyone know what that actually does?

Appreciate the offer, but I plan to go for a new item so I don't ever have to question whether or not it is working.

Hope you got some deep pockets, few months ago someone priced a new one and it was almost $300 IIRC

Mazdatrix has the switch for $145.00, which is high but I can handle that.

Rock Auto has them for much less.. around $75 to $100.

I'd offer mine for $30 shipped if anyone wanted it.
