Immediate Help Please, Broken Peices of oil cap dropped into filler tube!
 

I was puting the oil cap on and I heard it crack, took it off and part of the bottom is missing. By the sound I think two chunks broke off. The only thing I can think of is to get a shop vac hose in there. Is there any kind of filter in the tube? What should I do?

you must get it out! their is no filter there to my knowledge and if you can not get anything down there to grab it you could take the whole neck off. of course that would be a little bit of work :)

It dropped into the oil pan and there is a pick up tube with a screen mesh. If the pieces are large, it won't get sucked up and you do have a oil filter to trap the smaller pieces. You might want to drop the oil pan and get it out for piece of mind.

Yeah, the strainer will stop most of that from getting up there. However it could melt or something fun, which wouldn't be good. :)

Dont worry about the pieces melting, if your oil get that hot I would be more worried about the motor:D

Try draining the oilpan first, its a hell of a lot easier than taking the pan off

Same thing happened to me. It's no big deal really. The pick-up filter will never let them through, and if they don't come out when you next drain the oil they'll just float around in there doing no harm. :)

Just think, they'll start a happy platic-piece family in your oilpan! And one of these days when you open your engine up, you'll see about a million of them...

Put some top ramen noodles in there to keep them company. :)

I would drop the oil pan and see if you can get everything out. If there is something keeping the pieces from falling into the pan, and you can't get to it from the bottom, try one of those grabby things (they are like drain snakes, with a button on one end and 3 or 4 retractable prongs on the other). Or use something flexible with lots of grease ont eh end to pick up all the pieces.

you know when you pull the cap off a quart of oil there is that little plastic ring left on the bottle? when my dad and i rebuilt the engine in my GTUs, we found like 3 or 4 of those rings in the oil pan. they were in there from the previous owner... the strainer in the oil pan caught them.

^^^^ LOL ^^^^ I think you'll be fine. If you get real bored one day and need something to do, drop the oil pan and take the pieces out. And maybe get a new oil cap?

That's a helluva lot of work for something that's completely harmless.

Cant the broken pieces get into the oil pump chain and the CAS/MOP gears. You know the oil pan extends all the way to the front of the front cover don't you?

No, they will not. The oil starts its travels from the oil pan and thru the pick up which has a wire mesh screen.

Now, if you were running your car inverted that is a totally different story

Thanks for all the replies, I paniced yesterday when it happened, I didn't really take the time to think about where they actually went, I know exactly what you guys are talking about with that screen mesh on the pick up tube, I'm not worried about it at all now. Maybe this could be a warning to be careful when tightening your oil cap so other people don't have this problem!

To bad you don't have a turbo. At least that filler neck takes a 90 degree bend after the fill hole. Then a final 90 bend into the engine. So, at least with this you could fish out a foreign body.
