ignition upgrade necessary?
 

I have a s4 13bt with street port, bnr stage 3, megasquirt ecu. I will be ready for tuning sometime this year. I may get water/meth injection in the future. Any recomendations for ignition upgrades? For now I am thinking of sticking with the factory CAS.

Minimum I will be getting new spark plug wires, recomendations?

Spark plugs -right now I have all 4 the bur9eq I think. I also saw a thread on the 3rd gen by Dave Coleman about these autolite spark plugs. I have them at the shop. I forgot the part number, but I figured rotary spark plugs should be about the same for 13b rew and 13bt.

Ignition coils- any good upgrades to use with the factory cas, or are factory ones about as good as it gets, especially for my power goals

The stock coils are good for a 400 or so HP engine,so unless you intend on going bigger then you can just let them be!
I think I ran the Magnacor R100 wires.Beeefy 10mm jobbies.

i usually just stick with the stock coils since they work just fine for power levels upwards of 500hp to the wheels.

i don't necessarily like the magnecor 10mm wires either, they tend to break the terminals off very easily. yes they will warranty them for free but it's a hassle shipping them back and forth every few times you change the plugs and a terminal breaks.

IMO the stock wires and coils are quite decent for what most people need them to do and you don't have to worry about making custom wire sets.

I'm thinking about getting these wires. Are the NA and turbo model part numbers the same? I was just about to order these, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Magnecor-49109-Ignition-Cable-Set-10mm-Mazda-RX-7-/310333585691?hash=item484152b91b&vxp=mtr , and it says it was for NA application. Either , not applicable because they are the same or Naturally aspirated.

BTW, do they come with seperaters so I can organize the wires?

Don't need separators, just use zip ties.

"10MM" ignition cables are just standard size wires or slightly larger, covered in 9MM of insulation.

Any quality set of ignition leads will do the job.

As for upgrading the coils, it is my experience that around the 400HP level, there is a benefit to running a CDI box on the leading coil. It makes it far easier during initial tuning when things are rich in that the spark isn't blown out. Then later, it makes burning through safe ratios w/potential water/meth injection easier. And plug life is extended as the hotter spark is far more tolerant of worn plugs.

Been running a Crane HI-6 on the leading coil for years.

Thanks Aaron! So part of me wants stock, ngk looks good and cheap. And part of me bought 10mm magnacore wires. I felt like I gave myself the benefit of the doubt the extra money is in the look of the setup if no function. Worst case not my expensive mod, but not my cheapest

the plugs themself are one of the more important aspects to the ignition once over 400whp. and yes aaron is right, i'd put an amp on the leadings for over 400 without water/meth and 350 with it.

I got my magnacore wires and I am slightly displeased. They were way too long. It took me a good 20 to 30 minutes to figure the best way to route the wires with excessive length and make my engine bay still look good. I would say they were around 30% longer than the ones off my car. So after the extra length, the extra thickness isn't as significant
Anyone else experience this with theirs?

Since the extra thickness isn't of benefit (per the smart guys Aaron and Karack) then maybe the extra length will make up for it.:lol:
