Ignition Removal Problem! Help
 

I need to get the ignition chamber located on the ignition assembley under the steering wheel,(yes where the key goes into) replaced. The insert hole where the key goes into is damaged and cannot start car properly. I want to pull old ignition assbly off and put in new. How do i remove the entire ignition assembley or how can i remove just the ignition(key) chamber. I was trying for awhile until i got frustrated. anyone?

The ignition switch is "riveted" together on the styering column,So what you have to do is drill those two rivets out, then switch will come off the column.After that is done and you have replaced the switch use some short Bolts and nuts and you are done.
Just make sure that you disconnect the battery before doing anything and that you have the Steering Pointed Straight in case you took the Steering wheel Off.That way you know that the steering will be Correct when you Turn the Wheel,left to right.

Riveted? Most ignition cylinders (including my 88 vert) come assembled with bolts that have break-off heads. When they reach a certain torque, the heads will snap off, making them difficult to remove. It's sort of an anti-theft kind of thing. Just use a sharp chisel and hammer to twist the bolts out. Don't try to use it to actually CUT the bolt head off, but use the chisel to grab one side while you tap it out. They'll come out pretty easily if you do it right.

That's the sure-fire way to steal a car in 2 minutes with a phillips head screwdriver, a chisel, and hammer. No hotwiring required, plus it defeats the steering wheel lock :D

It may be a bad choice of words..but they are not easy to get off.

Actually, the easiest way by far to do is to use a Dremel to slot the tops of the heads. Just Dremel a slot all the way across each head deep enough for a flat blade screwdriver to catch and off they come. It literally took me less than 5 minutes.

the idea about slotting a line across heads of bolts seems like it would work easy, that, or using vice grips and if im lucky they will break loose. thanks guys i will try today.

i might have to do this too soon, so i had a question. if i use the dremel or chisel way to unscrew with flat head, can i reuse those same bolts or will i need to replace?

if you dremel you can reuse them but chiselling them or using vise grips really messes them up, but if you can spare one of them you can go to the hardware store and get real bolts , they are easier. dont forget to pull of the key buzzer thing, and be carefull the soldering on these wires is 20+ years old, it tends to let go

same thing took me all of 5 minutes and i was able to reuse the bolts so no extra trip to the hardware store etc, plus then in the future you can still take them off again even easier.
