If the stock wastegate is ported a bit beyond

the washer, will it affect boost? Just a little bit. At 6:00 notice the port appears to go beyond the washer. Infact, the washer barley covers it. Reason I ask, I am having trouble building boost and hear no BOV. As well, my low end drivability sucks.
Thanks, Chris |
If you're having trouble building boost and don't hear a BOV try checking for a boost/vaccuum leak.
|
I can certainly see it affecting boost response...but marginally.
What kind of trouble are you having? No boost by 6000rpm? :) Or just really slow to build? |
A really slow build, and no BOV when I let off. I just had the turbo rebuilt and the wastegate was reported. Kinda not happy with it. I have checked all over for leaks. My idle boost is 10 under vacume. Seems good.

hmmm....................my 1/2bridge idles with 10in/vac
A street port should pull a bit more then that. Where is the BOV getting its signal from? and what RPM does it idle at? any surging at idle? |

Timing is fixed. I can only pull about 2psi of boost. As well, I noticed my secondary timing is wacked. Maybe I have fould plugs?
|
I can't see how fouled plugs would affect boost building without affecting much else....:dunno: worth a try though!
Is the wastegate arm and actuator clear and moving freely? Perhaps its stuck open? |

classicauto, I check that.
The Griffin, yes it is stock, but never had a problem with it. I have a ebc. |
What about the exhaust? Try unbolting the exhaust from the down pipe and see how it runs. Also, make sure the throttle is opening all the way when you push the PEDAL to the floor. Other than that, double check all the piping for your front mount IC. Good luck.

Close the wastegate, shine a flashlight behind the closed valve, and take another pic. If there is play in the shaft, it will affect sealing as well, if the hole isn't nice and round.
|
You're messing with ignition timing (and fuel?), and you're wondering why the car is not working right???
-Ted |
Ted, the ignition was funny due to some wired bug in the Rtek. I am not messing with fuel, and have my stock coils hooked up. My problem is with boost.
|
Just checked my wastegate, it is not stuck open.
|
Your wastegate port looks as if it might be too big on one side and might not be sealing well, hence the reason I recommended shining a light behind it to look for light leakage around the perimeter of the washer. Also try to move the washer side to side with it closed, simulating what might happen while driving. If you have light leakage, you also have gas leakage, leading to slower boost rise.
|
yea but his boost issues shouldn't be that bad. If it's not hitting boost really than the BOV wont blow off. Try disconnecting your boost controller and cap off your wastegate actuator. If it's still not hitting boost then you have some other problems. Maybe the turbo isn't getting much oil or something like that and just isn't spinning like it should.

With the hybrid turbo's,you need to add tension to the actuator arm to hold closed the wastegate flap from opening early. Some drill the actuator arm closer to add tension or add an external spring. If yours isn't modded then I would try that first to combat the boost build issue.
