Idle problems the first 20 sec after starting
 

I have an 87 TII and have been having idle problems.
Eveything was stock and I had a guy work on it. He took the UIM off and replaced a hose. The next morning it had an idle issue. I have to rev it to 3k for about 15 seconds then it will idle fine at about 1500 rpm then when it warms up it will idel at 750.

I have recently torn the whole thing apart and did some custom work like removing the smog eqp etc.

When I fired up the vehicle it had the same problem. (won't hold idle first 15seconds)

what should I check out first?

start with the basics. spark plugs. check out the fsm they have a step by step troubleshooting guide to rough idling. theres also an archived thread for idling issues

Yeah I've gone through some things. NO VAC leaks.

I was hoping someone had this problem before. Just seems weird it will idle if I rev it up a few times. I mean it's idleing when cold just not the first 15 seconds. Can someone help me pinpoint this?

No, It had this problem right before I went through a major overhaul.
I bought this car after it was traded in. The previous owner had a small local shop put in a new engine. They did very shitty work. Leaking coolant low oil pressure the list goes on. The car ran ok and would idle at first start up. But after I let some tech touch it and he screwed things up I decided to learn and do the work myself.

I can say that the tech who worked on it adjusted the lean and rich screw. Which from what I understand should never be touched. I've since adjusted the timing and it runs great I just have this cold idle (first 15 seconds) problem and I'm stumped:uhh:

Reset the mixture adjustment by procedure in the FSM, it worked great for me (until I thought that running ethanol would be a good idea, adjusted it again and lost my nice idle).

I don't have the ambition to readjust mine because I am installing a Haltech E6X.

Suffice to say that RX7 fuel injection is finicky and not highly robust when it comes to idling.

Letting other people work on your rotary is almost always a bad idea (as experience has shown me).

I have found that setting the TPS first, the idle speed second, the timing third and the idle fuel mixture last works the best.

Hope you can get it adjusted back to that purr-like idle again.

sounds like your thermowax. if you removed that during the overhaul or its malfunctioning then that is why it wont hold an idle right after start up.

when you start it up just hold the accelerator at about 1K untill it warms up a lil and then you should be aight.
