Idle problem

Hi everyone,

I had my S5 T2 taken out of storage after 3 years and it hasn't been running that smooth. The car is able to start right up but jumps to ~3500rpm and won't back down even if the transmission is in gear (clutch depressed). After the initial warm-up, revs drop back to 1k and 2k where it idles roughly. (Link to video below)

Anybody have any clue what may be causing this? Mechanical or electrical issue? I am worried it is one of the solenoids and will try to read the resistances later.

Engine and electrical systems are all stock.

Thanks.

Check for cracked vacuum lines, temp sensor

Out of storage after 3 years?

Removing An RX-7 From Storage, Dealing With Improper Storage

If it wasn't stored correctly, the entire fuel system will need to be flushed. Replace pump, filters, have injectors professionally serviced.

Beyond that, idle issues are almost always a vacuum leak. Such as mice chewing through the TID.

high idle issues are usually related to the thermowax being clogged or air pockets in the cooling system.

1k idle is still too high, 2k will usually cause idle pulsing issues.

So I spent a good amount of time last week tearing into the intake and throttle system, checking for leaks, solenoid resistances, etc. Couldn't find anything. But I begrudgingly took the car out for autocross and after the first run, the idle returned to normal!

I suppose one of the lines had a bubble or something else stuck inside but so far the engine pulls just fine. Compression is good and no funny noises either.

Anybody got a clue on what it may have been?

thermowax is/was clogged with gunk, or air.

as usual my answers are always overlooked too. lol

i guess having worked on a couple thousand FCs just isn't enough anymore.

Not saying your help and recommendation isn't appreciated. Just didn't know what to look for- even if I did remove the thermowax to check it out.

Thanks, everyone.

just a matter of making sure the coolant level is topped up before going out then just running the car thoroughly to circulate the coolant. if the passages were clogged and still giving you issues then you could look into poking things into the orifices. as styx would say "hoooo mama, poke that thing!"

I think it was likely an air bubble stuck in a coolant passage somewhere- when I first took the car out of storage, there was a drop in the coolant volume in the overflow tank. So I checked the coolant level, thermostat, pipes, and pulled the thermowax all to no avail. That was why I became worried that it may be an intake issue.

Oh well, it runs fine now- hope it doesn't happen again...
