excuse me for reviving an old thread, but how often should the pilot bearing be replaced, i just bought a new exedy clutch kit and i have to replace the rear main oil seal too, my car has about 100K on it and it seems as though this clutch in there is factory, so its in dire need for a replace, slippage, just a generalized number is welcome, thanks

Generally, you only need to replace the pilot bearing when you pull the transmission. Even then it may not NEED replacing, but you should do it anyway. Replacing it is cheap insurance.

yeah change it out with every clutch

I bought the Harbor Freight puller just like Hailers, ground down the "feet" on a bench grinder and it works perfect. I used the new bearing as a guide as to how much to grind it down.

well i gotta change the rear main oil seal anyways, im sure pulling a bearing will be the least of my worries, i more worried about being able to torque down the flywheel to spec, 364ft/lbs

btw... i had luck with the autozone puller

Sorry for pulling this up again, but I just wanted to add that I just rented the puller from Advance Auto and it worked great. It is the Powerbuilt Pilot Bearing Puller, and I think it costs about 30-35 bucks new.

That looks pretty good. I might buy one of those. Did you have to do any grinding etc on the puller to make it fit into the pilot bearing?

Sideways7 01-20-06 02:12 PM

Nope, it fit in perfectly. I'll post another pic of it where you can see it better in a little while. Ok, more like tonight sometime.

Well, I got a bit sidetracked last night, so heres the pic. The two arms fold flat, easily allowing them to fit inside of the bearing. You just turn the black screw thing at the top and it opens the two arms up. Once they are in place, you place the big U-shaped brace on the flywheel and tighten down the nut. As you continue to turn the nut, it pulls the arm assembly out. It took a few trys to get right, but did the job without drama.

I got the same one from Advance. For 25 new. (employee discount :) ) I'll let u know all know how it works out.

I used one from Auto Zone, I had to grind on the ends a little to make it fit, but it worked great (it's the type that uses a slide hammer).
