Identifying a turbo vs NA tranny.

I have to go look at a tranny to see if its a na or a turbo. (year 88)

Are there cosmetic differences, different mounts, different connections??????

Any help appricated!

Look at the bellhousing, the NA bell housing is smooth, and is one peice. The TII has 'ribs' on it and is bolted to the tranny.

So this is a Turbo tranny:

And this is a NA tranny:

Looks to be correct, let me dig up a pic of my tII trans to verify.

Actually, on second glance they both appear to be N/A, here's a pic of my Turbo trans.

Had me there for a minute.....

Because those are both out of NA cars.... woohhh.....
Yeah a picture of a Turbo tranny would be helpful.

Ok I see what you mean, what year is that from??

'88 I believe

i think turbo tranny's have two drain bolts and two fill bolts for changing the tranny oil whereas the na has one of each...i cant remeber ill go check the haynes manual

Sweet. Looks like the tranny Im about to go get is a NA.

Do you know if the 87' tubo tranny looks the same as a 88?

SonicRaT 03-25-04 07:38 PM

They look identical

Sweet yet again! Thanks!

1" input shaft for turbo versus 7/8"(?) input shaft for NA.
Try and lift it - the NA isn't bad, but the turbo trans will give even weight lifters some grunts.

As a side note, there are some J-spec turbo transmissions with smooth cases!  So be careful with ribbed versus non-ribbed...boy, that sounded bad. :)
