I think my car just Died. for the last time
 

Ive had prob's over heating, it would creap up at idle, so i pulled the fan shoud and checked if there was resistance when warm, there was, so makred the fuid lvl in my resavore and drove around for liike 10 min, wamred up, stayed at a resonable temature, slightly below half way, where it always use to sit

like 3 min later, it started to climb like mad, i didnt go far from home and whenn i got there it was liike 3/4 up and slowly climbing, stoped, smelled smoke or someting cooking and shut it down, poped the hood and cryed

there was coolent everywere and the fill neck was blowing mad steam out of it, there was also smoke coming from the bottem half of the engine (i hope its just the coolent goging over the exsaust headers or something)

and my coolent resavore is Completly full to the brim

ive been going back and forth with my mom, im lving at home while comuting to college and she things my idea that the seals are going, compression is pusshing air into coolent system, pushing coolent only way out =>Resavore

Does this sound like its seals, or is it someting else

1100 for car

Sounds like the coolant seals. Time for a rebuild or a swap. Sorry man.

Man, i KNOW what you are going through, i just got my car, it was 3800 dollars for a near mint condition 1988GTU with 63K on the clock when i got it. I was extremly happy and wanted it as a daily that i would mod a little here and there. the clutch fucked out on it, it produced an oil leak a week after purchase, it was the oil cooler hose. fixed them both and driving it nice and all this goodness, the paint started to almost simutaniously peel over the whole car, and at 67K THE ENGINE BLEW! i put a "new" one in from the J yard, and now everyone, including myself, seems to think this engine has a bad oil seal, or a leaky one, bc it smokes some.... jeez, sorry for the long post, i just get all --sniff sniff-- emotional about getting my ass handed to me. Oh yeah, im still paying for the car.... :(

I almost had the same problem today, but i think is urvived, but something is definitely not right with my car. I might need a new water pump, thermostat or a fan

I woudln't jump to conclusions about bad seals yet....
if you had bad coolant seals the car would smoke white smoke like crazy.
If it doesn't- you are probably fine.
I would check- maybe you got the wrong thermostat??
Could be a bad water pump or something...
Maybe gut the thermostat (remove the center section)- you can run like that- it may be OK. (DON'T remove the whole thermostat though!!!)

I think you are OK- just a cooling problem. DON'T overheat the engine again!!!! It's aluminum!

I think you'll be alright- No smoke=no bad coolant leak.

no smoke = no coolent leak?, it doesnt over heat untill i push it over 3.5k or so, if i do that like 2 or 3 times, all of a sudden, it climbes andi have to pull over

Check you belts- like the one for the water pump!!
It higher RPM's it may just slip....

Think about what happens when you rev.....

Maybe your Radiator is clogged!

Its a new radiaotr, and belts are tight, and if it was sliping, why would that push fluid into my resavore? water curculates fine unless i tough a hight rpm

this happened on my boat, the water pump impeller ws shot to death. I would check out the water pump.

Ok, the fluid in the reservior makes sense- the car overheated, the coolent boiled, cranked the coolant pressure, and it overflowed into the reservior. The reservior is there to handle the normal fluctuatons in the coolant level...
Now, what's causing the overheat? Since it only happens at high RPM's, that could mean it's.... drumroll.... anything related to your cooling system. here's why: If it's the pump, there's not much coolant flow and the car is able to dissipate heat at low temps, but at high temps it rapidly overheats. If the coolant lines are clogged, same thing... Fine at low temps, rapidly increasing temp at high RPM's...
Or it could be a bad thermostat... However, I doubt this because your coolant overheated at the radiator side. If the thermostat was busted closed, the coolant in the radiator basically doesn't touch the block coolant, so it'd be pretty hard to boil the radiator fluid.
Like they said earlier- sounds like the seals are OK, just the cooling system isn't flowing. Drain & flush the whole thing and check for debris. Check the pump for flow... Try punching out the thermo just in case- they're cheap...

Umrs, how do you tell if the coolant is overheating on the radiator or if it is on the ngine block? i am hoping my problem is the fan or thermostat. pump is expensive and hard to replace :(

Well, since it's overflowing on the fill side, that means it's coming out the radiator. Now, what this means is that either you're not getting proper flow (so the water acts like a big stangent pond- and overheats) or the coolant is low/improperly mixed. If you know it's not low, that means you've got a flow problem- and probably NOT the thermo. See, the thermo blocks flow from the radiator to the engine block until the coolant reaches a certain temp. At that point, it opens allowing the coolant to flow through the radiator and cool it. If your thermo were busted closed, the coolant would probably overheat and blow off a hose or something on the clock side of the thermo. Since it's coming out of the radiator area, you can assume the thermo is open but there's not enought water flow to sufficiently cool it. Thus, the water heats up and presto- overheat out the radiator fill. Either that or somebody's taken a blowtorch to your radiator....:)

If that is the case, it sounds like a bad water pump huh?

My car is running 210-230 no matter what, if not higher than 230. The radiator can be full, but everything is getting thrown out through the reservior. So it doesnt seem like a bad thermostat since stuff is getting through. Hmm interesting, then it is not cooling fast enough because the water pump is not pumping the coolant fast enough around the block. Did what i say make sense? If so, i think I have the problem solved

Get OEM parts, getting those aftermarket parts is stupid. I have doubts about those pump working as efficient as the OEM ones
