i think i broke my car...

i just finished swapping an 88TII into my 89 gtu today. i ended up having to swap all the wiring, and everything, and this has taken about a month now. its been quite expensive too. anyways, the engine on the NA died so i decided to buy a friends wrecked TII. well, now that ive finished everything, i started it up. ok, its cranking but wouldnt turn over. so i wired up the fuel pump to open up, and viola, it works! so we start the car, and its ok, but then, it cuts off. we try to start it again and pop! sparks fly from the engine bay, on the drivers side, and the fuse box goes nuts. then everything is dead. i cant get anything electronic to work. so im pissed. i just spent a month workin on this swap and i killed it somehow. so, i think what im gonna have to do now it part out the GTU and buy an 87-88 TII with a blown engine and drop that good TII engine in it. or should i do something else?

Did the sparks come from the starter?

hurleyboi514 02-24-02 01:13 AM

i couldnt tell, but the starter is fried, it wont work at all...

Felix Wankel 02-24-02 01:14 AM

What fuses blew, if any?

hurleyboi514 02-24-02 01:18 AM

i couldnt see them very well, my dad looked at them and said they looked fine, but still, nothing electrical would work. they blinked, when it happened , i saw red a few times... i think it came from the 2 big ones on top. they seem to have a light in them...

Just go through the wiring real good, and especially check the grounds. No sense in parting out a car that won't take much to fix. My TII had so many electrical problems when I got it, it wasn't funny. It starts every time for me now. :)

Easy there! :)
I had a friend who had sparks fly all over his engine bay and everything electrical died, but it started back up soon (bad contact / loose contact?). Either way, i'm sure it'd be less work to fix the electrical bugs than swap the engine into a new car!

Keep at it!,
Manolis

PS havin' my own problems with a swap and changing a friend's coolant too... but i refuse to give up :D

hmm, i dunno about that. swapping engines is pretty easy... ive done it dozens of times. now electrical stuff, im lost! ill look around and punch stuff tomorrow and see if i can fix it.

Manolis_D 02-24-02 01:53 AM

Hehe :)

Good luck with that tomorrow!
My friend and I have to figure out if his thermostat is bad tomorrow (fun fun fun)...

Don't punch the car. My mint 85 has a dent in the fender now cause I'm a dumbass

so things popped when the car was kinda runing? sounds like you may have your alternator wired backwards maybe.

kngrsll 02-25-02 11:21 AM

how exactly do i wire it backwards? i dont see how i could be so dumb, its pretty simple. i think it would be easier to buy an 87-88 TII and just drop the engine in it...
