I seem to consume a lot of oil.
I filled up my oil last month and drove ~1,500kms and checked when I was washing the car and noticed it was at the low line. Put a quart in and she was back to full. I don't have any smoke from the exhaust at all. I'm not very mechanically inclined, so any help is needed. I know they go through oil often, but I thought most people get oil changes every 3,000-4,000 miles/4,800-6,500kms. Unless it's normal to refill the oil often during those 3k-4k mile oil changes.

I'm sure someone that actually knows will tell you an accurate answer, but That might end ub being the normal oil burn for a rotary engine. Or at least somewhat close..

Rotary engines use oil by design. 1 quart in 1,000 is a little high, mine doesn't use that much anymore since the new engine, but, we found my turbo was burning it, so, we had it rebuilt too. I use 1/2 quart in the 1st 600 miles and hardly any in the 2nd 600 that I just crossed over. Previously it was a qt every 500.

Check the oil every morning or every time you fill the tank. A routine would be best so you don't get the low oil buzzer and have to pull over where it's not convenient. Rotaries inject oil to lube the seals and reduce apex seal heat.

How hard do you drive your car? The longer youre in high rpm's, the more the MOP will inject. People like me who give the car a once, maybe twice, a day redline don't see as much oil usage compared to those who Redline after every stop they have. Which is why I see a little more oil usage after an autocross day than I would say driving to and from school.

I shift before 3k all the time. Every so often I do go wot. I like to drive like an idiot sometimes. I go to redline at least once a drive, so one to three times a day most likely through 2nd usually. At least I know to keep oil in my car just incase!
My car is a 91 n/a couple with only 98,000kms. I also only managed 20mpg with 100% highway driving for 3.5 hours at 110kph the whole way. As soon as I come up with cash, ill change all fluids, filters and plugs and hope that changes. |

I'm roughly about the same as kel. I burn about a quart for every 3k miles. If you really want to look at things, take a look at your OMP, your oil lines, your pan itself, etc. Generally, if you see oil on the outside of the engine that you didn't didn't put there, that might be it. I know some of my lines got a little dented and didn't bother to replace when I ran off a curb...

When my rx was rotary powered, a good night of driving with friends, I could burn through quite a bit of oil. We got to the point of making bets on how much I would need to add at the end of the night.
Probably was the early sign of my motor going to rotary heaven. Shes in a better place now, without my foot on the pedal anymore. |
Just got under the car to see where my exhaust was rattling and I assume it's this:

It rattles at idle, but my car also idles low 300-500rpm sometimes but either way it rattles there. Best way to fix that? It's where my exhaust temp pipe is held. Also, could anyone chime in on this? The engine mount is bound to get caked in oil since the oil filter is right above it. Btw what year is your car? That will determine whether or not it is a mechanical or electrical MOP. If 86-88, you have a mechanical MOP and there is a vacuum 'spider' that controls the oil injection and it runs from IIRC the top vacuum nipple on the dynamic chamber. Check those lines all the way and make sure they are not damaged or removed etc. If 89-91, you have electric. Make sure that it is indeed functioning properly and that once again the vacuum lines are okay (but for one they are on the emissions/fuel rack, and I also doubt that a problem with vacuum would cause them to function too much). The MOP system is just tricky all together and why most s4 guys find it easier to just remove the system, block it off, and run a two-stroke pre mix. Plus it lubricates better.

The reason you feel the massive difference at 5500rpm is because your Aux ports are not working, it should feel completely smooth the whole way through the rev range. You CAN remove the Aux ports and actuators with everything still on the car, but it is a pita. However, if you want everything to work properly, you have to do it. Refer to the my post in the VDI thread.

Oil consumption seems to be fine now. Also, could anyone tell me the best place to get oil filters? I know everyone says OEM, so does that mean I go to my dealership? |
