i searched. transmission problems help!!!!!
 

i searched and couldn't find anything on the shifter being stuck in a position along with it being stuck in gear.



i was driving the other day and shifting fast. Not with much force or anything just fast. i shifted from fourth to fifth and hit right between fifth and third when i let out the clutch it was in third gear so i pushed in the clutch and tried to put the shifter in fifth. well it was stuck in the third gear position. i made it back home in third but now what do i do. i pulled the shifter lever and all the bushings look good. the shifter is stuck in third gear position and so is the tranny.
any help is much appreciated

oh yeah its an S4 1988 Turbo II

Does it move at all when the engine is off?

it moves like it is in gear maybe a 1/4" in each direction. it will not come out of gear with engine on, engine off, clutch in clutch out. ive tried every configuration. the shifter lever won't budge. i have tried to force it.


when i searched i found a few threads about the tranny being stuck in gear but the shifter moving freely. that is not the case with me.

This may seem obvious, but you have to get the installed shift lever into the 3rd gear position to pull the internal 3-4 selector rod back to neutral.
It sounds like the lever is to the right, in the 5-R neutral position.
Pull the lever left, toward the 3-4 neutral position, against the 3-4 internal selector.
You have to use some force to spring the tip of the 3-4 selector enough to make a gap where the tip of the connecting rod (the one you're pushing with) can slip between 3 and 5, to get into 3.
It's kind of a backwards "L" motion, left then forward. I hope this make sense..
It should snap into 3rd, and you can pull it straight back.

I used tons of force even tried using my foot but it still didn't do what you are saying i pushed it towards the drivers side then towards the front of the car. any other suggestions?

Wow. broken shift fork? Any grinding noises?

cadence, where are you in louisville? there are a whole crew of us here. if you want i'll be at the ls meet tonight and can stop by to take a look at it.

If you can't force 3rd back to neutral, then you're gonna have to pull the tranny & open it up to see what broke.
It may not be to expensive if it's just a selector linkage or fork problem.

I won't be able to make it to the meet as i have plans. i used to be on LS as cadence but i let one of my freinds use my old screen name and i got banned. i tried to reason with the owner but alas im still banned. oh well.

im trying to plan a little FC meet and cruise in louisville. i know two other black turbo II's that would be down and a blue s5 you would complete the death squad of blackness. heh

but anyway. i guess ill pull the tranny. thanks for the advice. i thought when i originally did it it was a shift fork but i have never had a car with steel shift forks so in the past they just broke and the shifter moved around alot. damn mitsu tranny's. heh

I know whats wrong, same thing happened to me. The tail housing, the shift fork in there is jamed, you gotta take the whole monkey apart to get it un-jammed and probably replace the fork, or just go to the J yard and get a new tranny. Good luck my man, i hope im wrong
