i rebuilt my engine / not hard at all

well i just wanna share my expirience rebulding my first rotary engine, and i wanna say i was not that hard...my car 88 n/a 13b blow a apex seal (carbon) that the old owner put on...only last me 10000 miles since i got the car...anyway i got the athkins video and a haynes manual and i think anybody with low budget (like me) that wanna save on labor can do it...in the beginning i though getting a rebuilt engine (US$1750 - US$2000) plus labor (US$700 - US$1000) instead i spend that money in getting new rebuilt kit with steel apex seal, new corner ,springs seals, oil o-rings, gaskets , etc...plus new rotors bearings , stationary gears bearings, new oil pump , oil pump chain, pressure regulator , two new turbo 2 rotor housings ported,a new aluminum flywheel fron rb , centerforce clutch, new front bearing, thrust plate, spacer, plus new heater hoses ,radiator hoses , byopass hoses and i street ported myself, for almost US$2700...i think is not that bad...at the moment my car only has 300 miles since rebuilt and so far is perfect...the idle is a little different that it was before..i guess is the streetport....now i'm ready to do my brother 90 vert..

How much was just the rebuild kit alone?

Icemark 10-08-02 10:51 PM

Great, glad you could do it yourself!!!

Oddtodd76 10-08-02 10:51 PM

Because I am looking at a 91, with a bad motor.

djaffinitee 10-08-02 10:53 PM

How many hours did you spend doing the rebuild???

ech72 10-08-02 10:55 PM

it was US$850.00 from athkins...new apex seal , side seals, springs ,oil control o-rings,rubber seal , gasket kit, pretty much everything that you need...

koukifc3s 10-08-02 10:58 PM

cool! maybe one day I'll rebiuld mine too!

ech72 10-08-02 11:01 PM

it took me around 2 -3 hours to take the engine and transmission out and then 1 to 1 1/2 hours to take the engine apart...after that basically took time to get parts after i got everything i need took me around 3 hours to put the engine back together and the next day i put it in the car ...also my brother help me to put it back in the car..is faster and better

Oddtodd76 10-08-02 11:02 PM

Yeah, estimated, how many hours did it take? Did you run into any problems?

Oddtodd76 10-08-02 11:03 PM

Not bad at all!

ech72 10-08-02 11:16 PM

the only problem that i got was when i try to start the car for the first time...it will not start for nothing ...so i pushed get it in second gear and start right up....let it running for 2 hours to make sure nothing leaks, chack all fluids , adjust idle , timing, and ready to go

So you spent $2700 on a car worth maybe $2200 in the book? Dont get me wrong, I believe in rebuilding these cars when in good shape, but man...you must really love it.

Wow 4.5 Hrs to rebuild the shortblock! Thats impressive for a first timer. It took me longer than that to clean it up and measure everything to check spec. when I did my rebuild.
