RTRx7 05-17-10 09:38 AM

Ebay

hashman626 05-17-10 06:40 PM

I've checked out mazdatrix and I couldn't find a stock shift lever there, only short shifters. about a year and a half ago I bought a very cheap short shifter off of ebay, very disappointed but I guess thats what I had comin with ebay, in third gear it would rattle like some words I wont say on the forum. and after reading about the short shifters on mazdatrix, i think it was 1 out of 5 cars will rattle with the short shifters, and those ones were pretty nice, about 120$ more than the ebay junk, so i really want a stock shift lever

The OEM shifters on Mazdatrix are like 2/3 down the same page that the short shifters are on: http://www.mazdatrix.com/g4.htm In the section below the inner shift boots, right under the stock shift knobs.

They're expensive though, I'd wait to get a decent used one from a forum or something. There's really not much that can go wrong with it.

I have thrown these out in the past, put a WTB ad up and im sure you will get many responses, I would just give you one for the price of shipping but I dont think I have any left

hashman626 05-17-10 07:09 PM

gotcha haha, my bad, I just looked before I came back to check this forum. I remember seeing them but they don't have the 3-screw center piece (best I can describe) like the stock ones and short shifters so I don't understand exactly how I would install it...

zeal 05-17-10 10:29 PM

I will be replacing mine soon with a Corksport. You can have it for cheap. Bushings feel shot, plus I like short shifters, so getting rid of both those issues lol.

The "3-screw center piece" you are describing is part of the rubber seal (officially called inner boot) that is replaceable on the shifter. It is not a "part of the shifter" to say since its a removable piece.

These tear up and leak oil and get replaced whenever servicing the shifter most of the time. It is also located on the mazdatrix page where the rest of the shifter parts are located.

@jjcobm, ill post a picture of my shift lever really soon, within a day, just to show you what it looks like, bought my car used obviously, i'm the third owner, and my shifter is lacking all sorts of things, and inner boot is one of them, thanks for you post!

hashman626 05-18-10 04:29 AM

Alright, here is a picture of my shift lever. Earlier in this post I commented on how the oem shift lever @ mazdatrix.com (http://mazdatrix.com/g4.htm) didn't have the 3-screw center piece, how I described it. I was informed by jjcobm it was the inner boot, turns out it's not but I do appreciate his comment because he brought to my attention another piece I need to replace so that's positive. So now I am trying to figure out what is the name of this metal piece which has 3-screw holes and why the oem doesn't have it, unless it does and is not pictured or if I simply use this same piece with a replacement shift lever??

zeal 05-18-10 08:53 AM

that definitely looks like some ghetto-rigged and badly painted ebay shifter. check your pms

JerryLH3 05-18-10 09:06 AM

The inner boot and 3 screw center piece you refer to are one unit, which is called the inner boot, the earlier poster was correct.

Same page as Ted posted, http://www.mazdatrix.com/g4.htm

"81-95 Inner Boot on shift lever
(Bolts to trans tower)
Comes with new gasket"

It costs $31.35 at Mazdatrix, and should be available at your local dealer.

jjcobm 05-18-10 09:14 AM

Its the inner boot, you need to look more carefully. Replace the bushing that is under the boot and the ones on the trans when replacing the boot.

Ruski 05-18-10 09:18 AM

My shifter came right of shifting into second last night and honestly i wouldnt buy another "stock" shifter for it seeing how the fitting is on it. Its just soft rubber on the inside with one bolt on the side that tightens it. I got some random Canadian Tire (Canadian auto/everything u will ever need store lol ) shift knob and it fit just right with out using any of those plastic caps sits in there dead. Il post some pics of the after math. (worn out shifter + new shifter box + installed shifter) http://i975.photobucket.com/albums/a...i/IMG_0679.jpg http://i975.photobucket.com/albums/a...i/IMG_0677.jpg http://i975.photobucket.com/albums/a...i/IMG_0682.jpg

Ruski 05-18-10 09:23 AM

And since we are on the subject dose any one notice if their shifter base ( like the actual metal rod) heat up at all. Cuz mine seems to be some what hot after driving around for a bit. only noticed it yesterday since my shifter came of and thats the only thing i had to use to shift up and down. ( and no i dont grind gears.) im thinking im due for a tranny flush. Not sure if the rx has any sort of tranny cooling system or not but from what understand new cars do.
Thanks in advance.

The Russian.

JerryLH3 05-18-10 09:33 AM

Stock manual transmission cars had no transmission oil coolers, but stock automatics did.

jjcobm 05-18-10 09:37 AM

Looks like someone tried to dissasemble the entire shifter by pulling the two halves apart. The stock shifter is held on there pretty good and you should never run into that problem. I had a buddy who did the same thing (didn't think of sliding the inner boot out) and ended up with the same result you did.

Rob XX 7 05-18-10 09:38 AM

Ruski- what are we looking at there because that aint a stock shifter that ripped out of your car

Ruski 05-18-10 10:05 AM

Ya my bad i was thinking auto.
Umm i dont see allot of 89-92 Fcs with stock shiftknobs in them so i might be wrong. I checked the site and thats exactly what the stock oem shifter looks like. The black and silver is the new one i installed an hour later.

Edit:
I had to use a vice to unscrew the handle off so i could reinstall the old leather boot with the new shifter, thats why it has scratches on it.

Rob XX 7 05-18-10 10:16 AM

ruski- definitely not a stock shifter, that is some kind of aftermarket thing

hashman626 05-18-10 05:22 PM

@JerryLH3, well if the piece which I described is the inner boot, does the inner boot from mazdatrix have a metal piece, it looks all rubber but I may be wrong

JerryLH3 05-18-10 05:32 PM

Yes, the rubber is molded onto the metal piece and it slides over the shift lever and bolts on to the transmission.

Here's a picture of my Cork Sport short shifter. They ship them with the inner boot already slid over the lever.

okay, thanks for that!
