i need help taking my rear end off my t2!

ok i searched and i have been following
https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/walkthrough-na-differential-removal-522066/
^ that thread on how to remove it. now my problem is i don't understand what he is saying about removing
"I loosened the subframe bolts in the front, just to maybe get a bit of play in the subframe, I don't know how much I got, if any, but I didn't want to leave that out. "

i see the big 19mm bolt in the front i took that nut out and the 14mm nut that is next to it but my sub-frame is not getting any lower. please tell me more pointers on how or what to take off please i need to get this car out of here really soon and i need to save this rear end.! please don't say search because i have searched for like 2 days and i am not getting anything that is helping me with this

I just did this recently too. I would loosen the 2 nuts from each side, but not completely take them off. Then use a crowbar or something to wedge between the subframe and chassis, then force the subframe down. That should work. Make sure the car is on jackstands. :)

I saved this from another member on here a while ago, found it the most helpful

"disconnect: rear half of exhaust, drive shaft (4 nuts/bolts), shocks (2 nuts each), the 2 rear brake lines, 4 bolts that hold the subframe and diff. up, the sublink connector thingy (1 bolt/nut), and get the hell out of the way because at this point it's already falling down.

Differential housing connects to the top of the subframe with 2 nuts, and connects to each halfshaft with 4 nuts each. If you're actually opening up the differential housing, I'm not sure about that stuff, I only swapped out the entire housing."

so how long did it take you to do this?

Mankdrake 2661 06-01-07 07:46 PM

Since we're on the subject....is it possible to replace the diff gears and the bearings to the half shafts without removing the whole rear end?

I don't think so... isn't the gas tank in the way? I have removed my rear sub-frame before... would you like help?

ya I have to drop out my old GXL diff with the stub axles and axles and rotors and brakes and hub lol. Put in my new TII diff with stub axles, axles, aftermarket cross drilled rotors, new TII piston brakes, braided brake lines and hubs of course. lol so does anyone need a GXL diff and axles lol

MillerLite 06-01-07 11:17 PM

DROP THE SUBFRAME ALWAYS. im sure you can attest to the fact that its easier after doing so. i didnt, now i have to deal with replacing the rear mount bolt that i stripped out from moving the diff around and up and down too much trying to jimmy it out without dropping the subframe...
